WB hires writer for new Twilight Zone movie

Warner Bros. is preparing to enter a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity, an area which we call the Twilight Zone. Variety reports that the studio has tapped Christine Lavaf to write the script for a new Twilight Zone movie.

RELATED: The 9 Most Haunting and Personal THE TWILIGHT ZONE Episodes

Lavaf has sold a number of original spec pilots this year and also worked in the writer’s room for Legendary’s MonsterVerse. Leonardo Di Caprio’s company, Appian Way, is still producing for Warner Bros. The film will not be an anthology – like the 1983 feature – but will instead be a single story with various elements from The Twilight Zone series.

A number of writers and directors have been attached to a feature reboot of The Twilight Zone over the years including Rand Ravich, Jason Rothenberg, Anthony Peckham, Joby Harold, and Ari Eli Coleite, all of whom penned the script over the past eight years. In addition, several filmmakers have been attached including Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes, The Batman) and Joseph Kosinski (Tron Legacy, Oblivion).

Created and hosted by Rod Serling, The Twilight Zone originally ran for 156 episodes over the course of five seasons mixing sci-fi and horror elements with timeless cautionary tales. The series has been revived twice, in both 1984 and 2002. The first feature film included sequences from the original series remade by directors including John Landis, Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, and George Miller.

David Mamet to script The Force movie for James Mangold

Deadline reports that legendary writer David Mamet is in talks to write the script for The Force, the upcoming feature adaptation of the just released novel from Don Winslow. Should Mamet sign on, Logan and 3:10 to Yuma director James Mangold is set to helm the picture which hails from 20th Century Fox and Ridley Scott’s Scott Free.

Winslow’s novel, which hit stores today, is officially described as follows:

Our ends know our beginnings, but the reverse isn’t true . . .

All Denny Malone wants is to be a good cop.

He is “the King of Manhattan North,” a, highly decorated NYPD detective sergeant and the real leader of “Da Force.” Malone and his crew are the smartest, the toughest, the quickest, the bravest, and the baddest, an elite special unit given unrestricted authority to wage war on gangs, drugs and guns. Every day and every night for the eighteen years he’s spent on the Job, Malone has served on the front lines, witnessing the hurt, the dead, the victims, the perps. He’s done whatever it takes to serve and protect in a city built by ambition and corruption, where no one is clean—including Malone himself.

What only a few know is that Denny Malone is dirty: he and his partners have stolen millions of dollars in drugs and cash in the wake of the biggest heroin bust in the city’s history. Now Malone is caught in a trap and being squeezed by the Feds, and he must walk the thin line between betraying his brothers and partners, the Job, his family, and the woman he loves, trying to survive, body and soul, while the city teeters on the brink of a racial conflagration that could destroy them all.

Mamet’s career has ranged from plays to feature films and even into television with notable works including The UntouchablesGlengarry Glen RossThe Postman Always Rings Twice, and The Unit.

Jack Black and Eli Roth are developing a The House with a Clock in Its Walls movie

A The House with a Clock In Its Walls movie is back on track today as The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Eli Roth is set to direct the big screen adaptation of John Bellairs‘ 1973 gothic mystery with Jack Black set to star. The book, Bellairs’ first to follow protagonist Lewis Barnavelt, was originally published with illustrations by Edward Gorey. The big screen version will feature a script by Supernatural‘s Eric Kripke, who has been attached to the property for some time.

The House with a Clock In Its Walls is described on the late author’s official site as follows:

Lewis had always wanted to live in a house like Uncle Jonathan’s — full of marble fireplaces and secret passageways and dozens of unused, unexplored rooms. And living with Uncle Jonathan, a real wizard, was full of fun and surprises.

But while Uncle Jonathan practiced funny and comfortable white magic, the original owner of the old house, Isaac Izard, had been an evil sorcerer. Isaac Izard had devised a plan for bringing about the end of the world. Somewhere in the walls of the house he had hidden a clock. Every night Lewis and Uncle Jonathan could hear it ticking — sometimes loud, sometimes soft — marking off the minutes until doomsday.

Lewis knew they had to find the clock before it was too late. Then he decided to dabble in a litte magic of his own, and their time almost ran out.

Set up at Amblin EntertainmentThe House with a Clock In Its Walls movie has Brad Fischer and James Vanderbilt producing alongside Kripke. Laeta Kalogridis, Tracey Nyberg and William Sherak are serving as executive producers.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller have exited the Han Solo movie, citing creative differences

In a surprising turn of events, Phil Lord and Chris Miller have just exited the still-untitled Han Solo movie, currently in production.

“Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm in a statement just posted to StarWars.com.

“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew,” add Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

It was previously revealed that the film will focus on how young Han became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley. It has since been confirmed that the film will span a seven-year stretch, covering Han’s life from 18 to 24, showcasing how Han came into possession of the Millennium Falcon and how he first met Chewbacca.

The film is set to feature Hail, Caesar‘s Alden Ehrenreich as Han, Atlanta‘s Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian and The Force Awakens‘ Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. Woody Harrelson is attached to play Han’s mentor, a man by the name of Beckett, while Game of ThronesEmilia Clarke, Westworld‘s Thandie Newton, The Wire‘s Michael K. The untitled Han Solo film remains scheduled for a May 25, 2018 release.

Damon Lindelof is reportedly developing a Watchmen HBO series

Watchmen may be headed to the small screen. Variety reports that HBO is looking into developing a take on the Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons comic book classic with The Leftovers‘ Damon Lindelof. This Watchmen HBO series is reportedly unrelated to the version that the cable channel was eyeing two years ago with Watchmen film director Zack Snyder.

RELATED: R-Rated Watchmen Animated Feature Planned by Warner Bros.?

Originally published as a 12-issue miniseries beginning in 1986, Watchmen quickly become one of sequential art’s most acclaimed stories. Snyder’s feature adaptation of Watchmen, meanwhile, was released in 2009 and brought in just $185 million at the worldwide box office. The cast includes Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Carla Gugino, and Patrick Wilson.

Since the film’s release, DC Comics released an extensive “Before Watchmen” comic line, telling stories from the pasts of the central characters. More recently, DC Comics has made efforts to integrate Watchmen into the broader DC Multiverse.

Lindelof, whose The Leftovers recently concluded its three season run, is best known for co-creating the hit ABC series Lost. His contributions to the big screen include scripting films like Prometheus, Tomorrowland and Star Trek Into Darkness.

Two Sentence Horror Stories - Guilt Trip

Two Sentence Horror Stories reveals first episode at LAFF 2017 and unleashes an exclusive clip

Premiering tonight at the 2017 Los Angeles Film Festival is the new digital anthology series Two Sentence Horror Stories‘ premiere episode “Guilt Trip,” a chilling tale of a woman who picks up a young man on a dark road one night and lives to regret her act of kindness. We have an exclusive clip from the film to share below.

Inspired by the viral fan fiction, Two Sentence Horror Stories is a provocative anthology series that explores primal and social fears, filtered through the anxieties of the most connected and racially diverse generation. The series grew out of creator Vera Miao’s love of horror and thriller movies as an art form that gives us license to dig into our deepest fears, grapple with contemporary social issues, and feature characters that reflect the diversity of today’s audiences. Each episode is inspired by its own horror story told in two sentences. “Guilt Trip,” written by Miao and directed by J.D Dillard, gave the team a chance to bring the familiar “hitcher” trope into a contemporary setting, where information is shared with lightening speed, and misconceptions happen just as quickly. All episodes in the series are focused on the persistent atmosphere of dread, suspense, mystery, and wonder central to the psychological side of the genre. The premise that what you can’t see is scarier than what you can drove every aspect.

Two Sentence Horror Stories is produced by Stage 13, a new original digital content brand, showcasing a new generation of talent and fresh creative voices. Judging by what we’ve seen here, we’re excited to see more. “Guilt Trip” plays alongside the second Two Sentence Horror Story “High and Mighty” at 6:45pm tonight at LAFF. Frontrunners to Replace Lord and Miller on Han Solo Film Emerge

Frontrunners to replace Lord and Miller on Han Solo film emerge

Last night, a bombshell arrived online in the form of the departure of directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from the upcoming Han Solo Star Wars movie, with the pair and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy citing “creative differences.” Kennedy also noted that “a new director will be announced soon.”

With the dust at least semi-settled, Deadline reports that a potential replacement for the pair could come in the form of Ron Howard. Howard is attached to projects in development but isn’t currently filming anything. In addition, the outlet notes that Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote the Han Solo film with his son Jake, is also a potential replacement for the film. Kasdan has been involved in the Star Wars franchise since The Empire Strikes Back and has even directed some films of his own, including The Big Chill and Silverado.

The Hollywood Reporter corroborates that the pair are in contention for the job, while also noting that Joe Johnston of The Rocketeer and Jumanji is another name being floated for the position. Johnston began his career working on the first Star Wars film and worked on the visual effects of every chapter in the original trilogy.

It remains to be seen who will sit in the director’s chair for the upcoming film when production resumes (as just three weeks were left of the film’s principal photography) or how the Director’s Guild will handle the situation moving forward. Lucasfilm seemingly hopes to keep the film in its previously-announced May 25, 2018 release date.

The film is set to feature Hail, Caesar‘s Alden Ehrenreich as Han, with Atlanta‘s Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian and The Force Awakens‘ Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. Woody Harrelson is attached to play Han’s mentor, a man by the name of Beckett, while Game of ThronesEmilia Clarke, Westworld‘s Thandie Newton, The Wire‘s Michael K. Williams and Fleabag‘s Phoebe Waller-Bridge are set for undisclosed roles.

New Saw Movie Retitled Jigsaw, Logo Revealed

New Saw movie retitled Jigsaw, logo revealed

Previously the forthcoming new Saw movie, eighth in the horror franchise, was titled Saw: Legacy. Now, Lionsgate has revealed that the new feature will carry a new name, one based off its long-standing villain, and will be titled Jigsaw. The feature will arrive in theaters on October 27, and with just four months until release a teaser trailer for the feature can’t be too far away.

The upcoming sequel, which fittingly comes seven years after Saw: The Final Chapter, will star Laura Vandervoort (Bitten, Smallville) and Hannah Anderson (Shoot the MessengerLizzie Borden Took an Ax). Additional cast members have yet to be confirmed, but given the title change it’s a safe bet that none other than Tobin Bell will return as the titular villain. The feature was shot mostly in secret last fall.

The eighth Saw movie is directed by Michael and Peter Spierig (Daybreakers) from a script by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg (Piranha 3D, Sorority Row) alongside original creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell. Mark Burg, Gregg Hoffman, and Oren Koules are producing, as they have on all the previous films in the franchise.

All seven previous Saw films have a combined worldwide box office gross upwards of $870 million on a combined budget of roughly $67 million.
