It's Official! Ron Howard Takes Over as Han Solo Director

It’s Official! Ron Howard takes over as Han Solo director

In the wake of the departure of directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from the upcoming Han Solo Star Wars movie, Lucasfilm has officially announced that Oscar-winning filmmaker Ron Howard (A Beautiful MindThe Da Vinci Code) will take over the troubled project. He was on a very short list of filmmakers that also included the film’s screenwriter and Star Wars vet Lawrence Kasdan (Silverado, Dreamcatcher) -who may have been denied the job due to DGA regulations- and original Star Wars trilogy designer Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer, Captain America: The First Avenger).

“At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began forty years ago,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July.”

With the unprecedented situation of taking over a film three-quarters through shooting, Howard will be placed in the delicate situation of inheriting a cast and crew still rattled by the abrupt firing of Lord and Miller, whose directing style and tonal ideas earned the ire of Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. Howard will work with Kennedy and screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan to figure out what needs fixing, and will look over a rough cut of the film and meet with the cast this week. Just three weeks were left of the film’s principal photography, with five weeks of reshoots already built into the schedule for later this year.

It remains to be seen how the situation will evolve, and whether Han Solo can keep its previously-announced May 25, 2018 release date. A lot will depend on whether Howard decides to scrap most-or-all of what’s been shot, or simply reshoot certain sections. There’s also the question of Director’s Guild credit should a good deal of Lord and Miller’s footage survive. On one hand you have a Superman II scenario, where Richard Lester took over and only a small percentage of the uncredited Richard Donner’s footage survived, while on the other hand you have a situation like 2002’s The Time Machine, where Gore Verbinski completed the last 18 days of shooting and didn’t take credit. Even on last year’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story the film’s extensive reshoots were overseen by an uncredited Tony Gilroy, although director Gareth Edwards remained involved. It seems unlikely that Lord and Miller will remain credited on the film given the public nature of their removal.

Howard himself has a long history with Lucasfilm, having starred in George Lucas’s 1973 smash American Graffiti, and directed the Lucas-penned 1988 fantasy Willow. Howard was also reportedly asked at one point by Lucas to direct 1999’s The Phantom Menace, but declined. Although Howard has had a remarkable four-decade career as a director, he is coming off a string of flops (In the Heart of the Sea, The Dilemma) and underperformers (Rush, Inferno).

The untitled Han Solo film is set to feature Hail, Caesar‘s Alden Ehrenreich as Han, with Atlanta‘s Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian and The Force Awakens‘ Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. Woody Harrelson is attached to play Han’s mentor, a man by the name of Beckett, while Game of ThronesEmilia Clarke, Westworld‘s Thandie Newton, The Wire‘s Michael K. Williams and Fleabag‘s Phoebe Waller-Bridge are set for undisclosed roles.

Jurassic World sequel title revealed as Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom!

It’s exactly one year to the day that the upcoming Jurassic World sequel will hit theaters and Universal Pictures has finally confirmed the title of the film which is Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom! Check out the teaser poster below!

The upcoming sequel sees the return of Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard alongside newcomers Toby Jones, Daniella PinedaJustice Smith and Rafe Spall. Jeff Goldblum will also reprise his role as Ian Malcolm for the sequel..

Frank Marshall and Steven Spielberg are returning to produce the film, which has JA Bayona (When a Monster Calls, The Impossible) directing from a script by Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly.

Trevorrow previously revealed the quote from the original Jurassic Park that inspired their idea for the sequel, which comes from Sam Neil’s Alan Grant: “Dinosaurs and man, two species separated by 65 million years of evolution have just been suddenly thrown back into the mix together. How can we possibly have the slightest idea what to expect?”

“Every story is different and you need to find the depth of every story and try to express it on the screen,” Bayona recently told CS. “The ‘Jurassic World’ sequel is a more collaborative filmmaker experience, not only with Colin Trevorrow, but also with Steven [Spielberg] and with Frank Marshall. It’s their baby as much as it is mine. It’s about sharing views and working together to bring the story to life. But, at the same time, the way I face telling a story is to find something very personal. I think there will be plenty of myself also in the film.”

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is set for release on June 22, 2018.

Avatar Sequels Start Date Revealed by Producer Jon Landau

Avatar sequels start date revealed by producer Jon Landau

Deadline brings word from producer Jon Landau at CineEurope in Barcelona that the four upcoming Avatar sequels start date is now officially set for September 25, 2017! Pre-production on the four films has been underway in New Zealand since April.

“At the heart of any movie are the characters,” Landau said of the stories, which will all take place exclusively on the planet Pandora. “One of the strengths of great scripts are always the universal and relatable themes… There’s no more relatable theme than family. At the center of each of our four movies will be the Sully family. Each sequel will play as a stand-alone movie. Each movie’s story will come to its own conclusion… However, when looked at as a whole, the journey across all four movies will create an even larger connected epic saga for audiences around the world.”

Returning cast members include Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver, plus newcomers Cliff Curtis and Oona Chaplin. The Avatar sequels will be produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau through their Lightstorm Entertainment. The James Cameron-directed sequels are written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno.

20th Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment recently announced new release dates for all four of the films via the official Avatar Facebook page, saying, “Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels. The journey continues December 18, 2020, December 17, 2021, December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025!”

Released in 2009, the first Avatar film remains the highest grossing film worldwide with over $2.7 billion in box office gross. It was dethroned by Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the highest at the domestic box office, pushing past Avatar’s $760 million with a total of $936 million.

Slither: James Gunn’s riotous gorefest is coming to Blu-ray

Before he saved comic book cinema with his witty, warm and weird Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, James Gunn toiled in terror, getting his star with the scatological cult film imprint Troma, writing the Dawn of the Dead remake screenplay and writing and directing the uproariously slimy Slither, the deliciously demented story of an unnamed evil wreaking havoc on a small town.

Michael Beach has joined the Aquaman cast. Michael Beach previously appeared in James Wan's Insidious: Chapter 2.

Michael Beach will play a hijacker named Jesse Kane in James Wan’s Aquaman

Michael Beach has joined the cast of James Wan‘s Aquaman as a character named Jesse Kane. Per Variety, Kane is “high-seas hijacker” who comes face to face with the DC Comics hero. Beach’s casting reteams him with leading man Jason Momoa. The pair previous starred together on Stargate: Atlantis. That’s not even the depth of Beach’s deep sea experience, either. One of his earliest roles was in James Cameron’s 1989 sci-fi thriller The Abyss.

RELATED: The Aquaman Story is Set After Justice League

An icon for over 75 years, Aquaman is known by fans of DC Comics as the ruler of Atlantis who is also committed to protecting the entire globe, both land and sea. Shooting is currently underway on the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia, with extensive filming to be accomplished at Village Roadshow Studios. Filming will also take place in Newfoundland, Sicily and Tunisia.

The Aquaman cast also includes Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry; Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Ludi Lin as Murk, Patrick Wilson as Orm/Ocean Master and Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman as Atlanna.

Directed by Wan from a script by Will Beall, Geoff Johns and Wan, the film is being produced by Peter Safran, with Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Rob Cowan, Jon Berg and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.

Aquaman will hit theaters December 21, 2018. Audiences will get to meet the character again quite a bit sooner than that, however, as Aquaman is a key member of the Justice League. Look for the superhero ensemble to hit the big screen November 17.

What do you think of the addition of Michael Beach to the Aquaman cast? Do you think Jesse Kane will have any ties to existing DC Comics characters? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

ApesGet ready for 7 of the silliest and sexiest and strangest Planet of the Apes ripoff movies ever

20th Century Fox are prepping to release the third entry in their popular and high-gloss remounting of the Planet of the Apes franchise, War for the Planet of the Apes, which follows both Rise of and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, on July 14th, nationwide.

In War for the Planet of the Apes,  Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel (Woody Harrelson). After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

Now, that’s all fine and good and we know exactly the awesome flick we’ll get from this talent and budget pool. But what about those “other” Apes movies?

RELATED: All the Planet of the Apes movies ranked!

No, I’m not talking about the original 5 awesome Planet of the Apes movies. And I’m not talking about the TV series or the animated series or the Tim Burton version of the story either. I’m talking about the wild wave of rip-offs that blew out of every corner of the globe in the wake of the original Planet of the Apes’ international success.

As we’re getting pumped for the release of War, we opted to dive into the dump bin and dig up 7 of the kookiest Apes exploitation films we could find. Buckle in, you damned dirty humans!

The Evil in Us Trailer Revels in Drugs and Cannibalism

The Evil in Us

The Evil in Us: Yet another cabin in the woods horror movie coming to DVD and digital this summer

Same film, different day. Stop us if you’ve heard this one: gaggle of pretty young people drive to isolated cabin in the woods to party, drink, drug and screw and suddenly some sort of evil is unleashed that makes them turn feral and turn on each other. Seriously. Enough. What hath Sam Raimi wrought? It’s the same formula spewed forth endlessly since his landmark shocker Evil Dead and it’s been seriously “Bro-ized” since Eli Roth rothed it over with his Cabin Fever and it just. Never. Stops.

Now that I’ve got that bit of bile out of the way, maybe you’re still interested in writer/director Jason William Lee’s The Evil in Us, coming to DVD exclusively at Walmart (where it will end up in the dump bin of life) on July 4th and then be widely available on DVD, VOD and digital platforms on August 29th. The film stars Ian Collins, Kylee Bush, Debs Howard and John Gillich in a tired tale of young folks taking tainted drugs and turning into sort-of zombies or at least cannibal mutants or drug demons or…

Here’s the official The Evil in Us synopsis: Six school friends meet up for a fourth of July celebration on a remote island off the Washington coast for a weekend of fun and partying. But the good times quickly turn into a nightmare when they unknowingly take a new bio-active drug containing a virus that causes fits of psychotic rage. Only one girl, Brie, doesn’t take the drug and she alone must fight to stay alive as her friends slowly turn into bloodthirsty cannibals. Trapped on the island, Brie must endure the unimaginable and fight for her life.

Yeah, you’ve seen this before dozens of times but distributor RLJ Entertainment is banking on the possibility that you might want to see it once more. Have a look at the trailer below and see if The Evil in Us floats your boat…

Ron Howard Talks Taking the Han Solo Directing Job

Ron Howard talks taking the Han Solo directing job

In the wake of the departure of directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from the upcoming Han Solo Star Wars movie, Lucasfilm has chosen Oscar-winning filmmaker Ron Howard (A Beautiful MindThe Da Vinci Code) will take over the troubled project. After the official announcement yesterday, Howard spoke out to the press today (via Variety) about taking the Han Solo directing job.

“It’s a little opportunity that came my way,” Howard said. “I’ve been a fan forever. It’s gratifying to be asked to lend my voice to the [Star Wars] universe. So many people involved in the ‘Star Wars’ franchise are friends. It’s already been in production, and there’s a lot of really great work there.”

The director also took to Twitter, where he reiterated the key idea that he likes much of the work that Lord, Miller and their cast and crew have done already, which may signal a more piecemeal approach to reshoots as opposed to a top-to-bottom overhaul.

Filming will resume on July 10.

Howard himself has a long history with Lucasfilm, having starred in George Lucas’s 1973 smash American Graffiti, and directed the Lucas-penned 1988 fantasy Willow. Howard was also reportedly asked at one point in the late ’80s by Lucas to direct what became 1999’s The Phantom Menace, but declined.
