Rise of Skywalker Earns Lower Than Expected, Cats Get Spayed

Rise of Skywalker earns lower than expected, Cats get spayed

Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opened at #1 this weekend with an estimated $176 million domestically, far lower than advanced projections of $205 million and even Friday estimates of $193 million. Still, that domestic debut for the J.J. Abrams film is the 12th biggest all-time, the 3rd biggest of 2019 (after only Avengers: Endgame and The Lion King) and the 3rd biggest December opening ever. It is the 7th Disney release of the year to post an opening weekend over $100M.

This domestic performance didn’t touch either The Force Awakens‘ 2015 opening of $247.9 million nor The Last Jedi‘s 2017 opening weekend of $220 million. The downward trajectory could be a mixture of franchise fatigue, mixed-to-poor reviews, or possibly a later Dec 20 release date than the previous two Skywalker movies, which opened on Dec 16 and Dec 13, respectively. The later date meant non-die hard audiences were busy preparing for the upcoming Christmas holiday, and may catch the film next week instead.

Rise of Skywalker also took in $198 million internationally for an estimated global debut of $374 million. The film earned $35.5 million from 1,455 IMAX screens in 73 markets. That’s the 3rd highest IMAX Global opening in December and the 6th highest global opening ever for IMAX. In North America, the IMAX gross was $18.4 million, also the 3rd highest IMAX Domestic opening in December. International’s $17.1 million is the 2nd highest International IMAX opening ever in December.

At #2 was Sony’s sequel Jumanji: The Next Level, which brought in $26.1 million in its second weekend for a $101.9 million domestic tally and $311.9 million worldwide for the reuniting of Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin hart and Karen Gillan from the 2017 sequel Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. That’s already a solid performance for the new entry, but it’ll be a long hike to catch up to the last movie’s $962.1 million.

Coming in third was Disney’s Frozen II, which in its fifth week held steady with only a 35.5% drop to $12.3 million for a domestic total of $386 million for a worldwide haul of $1.1 billion. The animated sequel is only a hair’s breath away from surpassing the 2013 original’s worldwide gross of $1.27 million, and should continue to perform very well with families over the holiday.

This was a crushing week for Universal’s adaptation of the hit musical Cats, which despite a brand name, a star-studded cast and an Oscar-winning director in Tom Hooper took in a ghastly $6.5 million for fourth place. The poor performance appears to be a combination of awful reviews, a terrible C+ CinemaScore rating, and criticism of the film’s VFX, which were not helped by reports yesterday that Universal was sending out a new version of the film to theaters today with improved visuals. Internationally Cats only took in $4.4 million for a $10.9 million worldwide total. However you spin it, this is shaping up to be one of the big losers of 2019.

Lionsgate’s mystery comedy Knives Out continued to hold strong at #5 with $6.1 million for an $89.5 million total and $185.5 million worldwide. Lionsgate’s other big film of the weekend Bombshell went from 4 to 1480 theaters to take sixth place with $5 million for the Fox News sexual assault drama.

Vin Diesel’s Bloodshot Pushed Back For a March 2020 Release

Vin Diesel’s Bloodshot pushed back for a March 2020 release

Sony Pictures has changed the release date for their forthcoming action film adaptation of Bloodshot, based on Valiant Comics’ graphic novel of the same name. Originally set to debut on February 21, 2020, the Vin Diesel-led film will now hit the theaters on March 13, 2020, almost a month later than the previous release date. It will have minimal competition on the new date with Lionsgate’s Christian music romance I Still Believe and the STX family comedy My Spy starring Dave Bautista.

In addition, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Valiant Entertainment and Blowfish Studios are teaming up to develop a number of multi-platform video game based of Valiant’s popular characters which especially includes a Bloodshot video game.

“We’re thrilled to bring Valiant’s characters back into the video game industry and give fans the opportunity to play as their favorite superheroes,” DMG Entertainment (Valiant’s parent company) founder and CEO Dan Mintz said in a statement. “Translating these characters and stories to video games could not come at a more exciting time as we introduce the world to the Valiant Universe on the big screen with the Bloodshot release. These games are poised to become further proof of these characters’ immense potential as anchors in pop culture.”

Created by Kevin Van Hook, Don Perlin, and Bob Layton, Bloodshot tells the story of a former soldier, Ray Garrison, killed and brought back to life with technological upgrades thanks to Rising Spirit Technologies, filling his body with billions of nanobots. This allows him to be the perfect soldier by healing from injuries, shapeshifting and even interacting with technology. Ray, aka Bloodshot, suffers total memory loss and struggles to reconnect with who he was while learning what sort of weapon he has become, with the help of a group of other augmented combatants known as Chainsaw.

The star-studded cast includes Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious series, xXx series) in the title role, Toby Kebbell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Sam Heughan (Outlander), Eiza Gonzalez (Baby Driver), Talulah Riley (Westworld), Johannes Haukur Johannesson (Game of Thrones), Lamorne Morris (New GirlGame Night), Guy Pearce (Prometheus) and Alex Hernandez (Unreal).

The feature is directed by Dave Wilson, who worked with Deadpool director Tim Miller at Blur Studios, directing cinematics for video games including Halo 2Mass Effect 2 and BioShock Infinite. Academy Award-nominated writer Eric Heisserer (ArrivalThe Thing) has penned the script for the film, as well as another of the Sony/Valiant features, Harbinger.

Diesel will be reunited with producer Neal Moritz, who he has collaborated with on both The Fast and the Furious franchise and the first xXx film. Moritz’s other credits include 21 Jump Street and I Am Legend, plus another superhero film with The Green Hornet.

The Witcher Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

The time has finally come for the premiere of the Henry Cavill (Mission: Impossible – Fallout)-starring adaptation of the acclaimed fantasy novel series The Witcher, and what an exhilarating game of morality-balancing and deceptions did Geralt of Rivia have to play.

RELATED: Mandatory Streamers: Cavill Makes His Geralt Debut in The Witcher

Hunt for the Kikimora

The pilot opens with Geralt in a swamp area fighting against a spider-like creature known as a kikimora, with the monster attempting to drown its hunter while he tries to reacquire his sword to continue the battle. After grabbing his weapon and cutting free from the monster’s grip, Geralt arises out of the water and kills the creature. Before he heads into town to try and receive a reward, he finds a deer nearby wounded by the creature and kills it offscreen to eat.

No One Likes Witchers

Geralt heads into the nearby town of Blaviken with the hopes of selling the kikimora corpse and stops in the tavern while waiting to meet his contact. While trying to order some beer from the bartender, he is refused service by the man as well as harassed by other customers in the tavern, who would rather see him dead than help him out. However, another customer in the bar named Renfri (Emma Appleton) shuts down the bartender and keeps the peace in the tavern, siding with the monster hunter and buying him two beers.

The Alderman’s Daughter

After having a brief chat with Renfri, Geralt is found by his contact, Marilka (Mia McKenna-Bruce), the daughter of the alderman to whom he’s trying to sell the kikimora to, however, she clarifies her father was looking for a graveir’s corpse, as kikimoras are good for thinning out population. Despite this hitch in his plan, she offers to take him to the town’s wizard Master Irion, as he’s willing to pay for jobs that will get him supplies for various elixirs.

Choose No Evil

After being escorted to the tower of Irion, Geralt meets Master Stregobar, the sorcerer of the town who reveals that Irion has been dead for over 200 years and originally built the tower. Stregobar continues the legacy of Irion by taking his name as his own while out on the town and has hired Marilka to bring Geralt to him for a very specific task: killing Renfri. Stregobar discusses the Curse of The Black Sun, in which any woman born during the first full eclipse in 1200 years is cursed to bring about the return of the demon goddess Lilit to exterminate the human race. Stregobar has found other women born under the Black Sun and tried to cure them, but they all died due to internal mutations, and Renfri is supposedly the last of the cursed women and has killed various animals as a young girl and gouged the eyes out of her maid with her comb and killed one of Stregobar’s men with her signature brooch. While Stregobar still concedes killing her is an evil task, in order to prevent bringing about Lilit, it is the lesser of two evils and tries to convince Geralt of the same, but the witcher chooses to abstain and when given the choice between two evils, he’d rather not choose at all.

A Rebel Princess

While Geralt is having his meeting with Stregobar, audiences are introduced to the kingdom of Cintra and its teenage princess Cirilla, who often partakes in what are seemingly rebellious activities including dressing as a peasant and playing with the local children and speaking out of turn with her grandfather King Eist Tuirseach (Björn Hlynur Haraldsson) as her grandmother Queen Calanthe (Jodhi May) knights local soldiers. The King and Queen discuss the possibility of Cirilla becoming queen of the kingdom should it fall to Nilfgaard, their southern neighbor with whom they are warring.

Two Sides to Every Story

While resting in the forrest on the outskirts of town before journeying elsewhere, Geralt is visited by Renfi, who revealed she used to be a princess before she was attacked by Stregobar’s goon, who raped her, robbed her and let her go, losing her royal title as a consequence. She tries to get Geralt to side with her and kill Stregobar for her, claiming it is the lesser evil, much to his dismay as hearing that sentiment for the second time. Geralt declines her request and asks she leaves Stregobar and finally live her life rather than become the monster Stregobar and various townsfolk want her to become.

The Battle for Cintra

As Cirilla is kept locked up in the castle under protection from Sir Lazlo (Maciej Musiał) and sorcerer Mousesack (Adam Levy), Queen Calanthe and King Eist head into battle against Nilfgaard and despite some heavy blows made against the enemy forces, the Cintran forces begin suffering heavy losses and Eist is killed by Cahir (Eamon Farren), a Nilfgaardian officer. Calanthe returns to the castle gravely wounded and the kingdom begins falling to the enemy, with Mousesack protecting the castle with a force field to prevent invading forces from entering. However, this only lasts for a short time and the 100 Cintran citizens in the castle are brutally killed by the Nilfgaardians. Cirilla is told by Calanthe to escape and find Geralt, as he is her destiny.

The Betrayal

As he has a conversation with his trusty horse Roach, Renfri returns to Geralt to once again try and convince him to help her kill Stregobar, before choosing to accept his invitation to leave town and let him spare her and seduces him, with the two spending the night together. In his sleep, Geralt has a vision about Renfri and that her desire to kill Stregobar is too strong and that she has returned to the marketplace in search of the sorcerer, and he races back to stop her. He is confronted by a dozen of the townspeople from earlier and defeats them easily in battle, with Renfri emerging from the shadows holding a blade to Marilka’s throat. She and Geralt engage in a sword fight, with both sustaining minor injuries from each other’s blades before he is forced to stab her in the throat with her own dagger. Stregobar arrives and attempts to take Renfri’s body back for an autopsy, to which Geralt refuses, and Stregobar turns the crowd against the witcher, convincing them he murdered the group in cold blood. He leaves the town, taking Renfri’s brooch with him.

The Awakening

While Cirilla attempts to escape the city, Calanthe leaps out of the window and kills herself as other notable members of the kingdom still in the castle consume poison to kill themselves before they are killed by invading forces. As she and Sir Lazlo ride out on a horse together, he is shot and killed by Cahir and she is taken captive by the officer. During his journey back to his country with the princess in tow on the back of his horse, she awakens to see her city and castle burning down and it awakens a power in her to screech to the point of causing him pain, bringing down a nearby tower and creating a rift in the Earth, allowing her escape to find her destiny, Geralt.

The 12 Best Movies About Gearheads Ranked

Comingsoon.net is looking at movies that highlight what it means to be a gearhead—the need for speed. Check out our picks in the gallery below!

On numerous occasions in the Will Ferrell movie Talladega Nights: The Ballard of Ricky Bobby, the titular character expresses a desire to go fast. While that comedy does not make our list of dramas, the sentiment still stands. It epitomizes the type of meticulous mechanic who studies their craft in order to build the fastest machine possible.

The newest movie revolving around speed-hungry mechanics is James Mangold’s Ford v. Ferrari; the film has brought attention back to a genre (sometimes referred to as “Dad films”) that hasn’t been taken seriously in quite awhile. When it comes to films about racing, more often than not, they’re ludicrous. Those movies are fun (and necessary) but every now and again a good racing biopic comes along and highlights some of the hardest workers in the world. Here’s a list of some of the best movies about gearheads, and in turn racing, that have made that particular genre what it is today.

Amazon’s The Wheel of Time series adds recurring stars

Deadline has brought word that the cast for Amazon’s series adaptation of the fantasy novel franchise The Wheel of Time is expanding with the additions of Priyanka Bose (Lion), Taylor Napier (All About April) and Emmanuel Imani (Black Earth Rising) in recurring roles.

The trio will be joining previously announced cast members Daniel Henney (Big Hero 6), Madeleine Madden (Tidelands), Zoë Robins (Power Rangers Ninja Steel), Barney Harris (Clique), Marcus Rutherford (Obey), and Josha Stradowski (Just Friends). Based on Robert Jordan’s long-running fantasy epic of the same name, the series will be led by Oscar and Golden Globe nominee Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), who will play the lead role of Moiraine.

The Lion star has signed on to play Alanna Mosyani, a member of the organization of powerful women the Aes Sedai, renowned for her kindness and her temper. She has two Wanders by the names of Ihvon (Imani) and Maksim (Napier), who all have a complicated relationship built on love, sex and respect that make them a force to be reckoned with in battle.

The Wheel of Time, which has sold over 90M books worldwide, is set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it. The story follows Moiraine (Pike), a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization called the ‘Aes Sedai’ as she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women. Moiraine believes one of them might be the reincarnation of an incredibly powerful individual, whom prophecies say will either save humanity or destroy it. The series draws on numerous elements of European and Asian culture and philosophy, most notably the cyclical nature of time found in Buddhism and Hinduism.

Emmy nominee Uta Briesewitz (Westworld, This Is Us, Jessica Jones) will direct the first two episodes. Rafe Judkins (Agents of SHIELDHemlock Grove) is developing the series for TV and will serve as showrunner, with Sony Pictures TV co-producing. Wheel of Time began with The Eye of the World back in 1990 and ended with A Memory of Light in 2013. The final book was finished by Brandon Sanderson, as Jordan passed away in 2007. The eighth through fourteenth books in The Wheel of Time series each reached number one on the New York Times Best Seller list. The story follows a group of characters lead by Rand al’Thor on the search for the Dragon Reborn. There are 14 novels in the series, which was nominated for a Hugo Award after its completion. Combined, the books have sold more than 90 million copies, second only to fantasy novel champion The Lord of the Rings — which is also being developed into a series for Amazon.

Josh Boone reveals New Mutants trailer coming in January

While showing off a limited edition of Stephen King’s 2014 novel Revival on his Instagram, Josh Boone revealed in the comments that a new trailer for the long-delayed horror comic adaptation The New Mutants is coming to audiences next month, which could mean the film is still on track for its April theatrical release!

RELATED: The New Mutants Re-Shoots Will Finally Take Place This Year

In addition to Boone’s confirmation of a January premiere for it, comic illustrator Bill Sienkiewicz revealed in an interview with Kevin Smith on his Fatman on Batman podcast that Boone sent him a new work-in-progress trailer, calling it “phenomenal,” saying it gave him chills and that “it feels more Marvel in terms of what they’re doing.”

Reshoots were originally ordered by Fox to try and expand on the positive feedback to the horror elements in the first trailer. They were slated to film again in September 2018 for an August 2, 2019 release date, but without the additional production scheduled the film’s release date had been left in limbo. Sources say that the decision to move forward with the reshoots lay in writer/director Josh Boone’s hands.

Some have been questioning whether the film will even receive a theatrical release. Given Disney’s acquisition of Fox, rumors are circulating that the film may hold its premiere on Disney+ or Hulu rather than a traditional theatrical release. This would align with Marvel’s growing relationship with Hulu after the streaming service ordered four original animated series from the company, as well as talks of them reviving all of the Marvel series Netflix has cancelled.

RELATED: The New Mutants Might Be R-Rated, Depending on Reshoots

The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy (SplitThe Witch) as Magik and Maisie Williams (Game of Thronesgen:LOCK) as Wolfsbane, with Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Dani Moonstar, and Stranger Things’ Charlie Heaton as Cannonball.

The New Mutants adapts the monthly comic book series of the same name that launched in 1982. Created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, The New Mutants follows on a group of teenage mutants as heroes in training in the Marvel Universe. The feature is expected to be a departure from the sci-fi-action spectacle of other X-Men films and is instead being described as a “Stephen King meets John Hughes”-style horror movie.

In November 2017, ComingSoon.net exclusively revealed a leaked concept animatic from the film, which features Wolfsbane, Magic and Cannonball facing the Demon Bear.

Togo is the untold true story set in the winter of 1925 that treks across the treacherous terrain of the Alaskan tundra for an exhilarating and uplifting adventure that will test the strength, courage, and determination of one man, Leonhard Seppala, and his lead sled dog, Togo.

When a deadly epidemic strikes the town of Nome, Alaska, and the only cure is more than 600 miles away, the town looks to champion dogsled trainer Leonhard Seppala (Dafoe) to help transport an antitoxin serum. Seppala turns to Togo, an unassuming, undersized and aging Siberian husky, to be his lead. His wife (Nicholson) has championed Togo since his days as a mischievous puppy who could dig himself out of any situation—literally and figuratively—and Seppala, having observed Togo’s loyalty and tenacious spirit, knows Togo offers his only chance of surviving this mission. Undaunted by the massive storm heading their way or his wife’s urging him not to go, Seppala and Togo set out on the deadliest leg of what becomes a larger relay involving multiple mushers and gale-force winds and a wind chill factor dipping to 70 degrees below zero with little to no visibility. It is a harrowing journey on which Togo goes down in history as one of the greatest sled dogs ever, but it is this unbreakable bond between man and dog which is the ultimate prize—and which truly saves Seppala.

Suicide Squad Director David Ayer Says James Gunn is “Reinventing the Universe”

David Ayer may not be returning to the director’s chair for The Suicide Squad, but he has only good things to say about his successor, James Gunn. Back in 2016, Ayer helmed the first Suicide Squad movie, which introduced Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, among others. Ayer recently took to Twitter to clarify the relationship between the two movies. He also went out of his way to praise Gunn and share his excitement for the franchise.

Ayer went on to address the shared characters and performers between the two films. According to Ayer, Gunn is “reinventing the universe.”

Robbie is one of four Suicide Squad cast members reprising their roles for the non-sequel. Viola Davis is also back as Amanda Waller, with Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag. Idris Elba is headlining the film in a currently undisclosed role. David Dastmalchian will portray Polka-Dot Man, alongside Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, and Steve Agee as the voice of King Shark. Additionally, Nathan Fillion, Peter Capaldi, Michael Rooker, Storm Reid, John Cena, and more will appear in the film.

The Suicide Squad will hit theaters on August 6, 2021.

CS Interview: Director Jon Avnet on the importance of telling Three Christs’ story

The time is finally almost here for the biographical dramedy Three Christs to make its way to the big and small screens and ComingSoon.net got the chance to talk with co-writer/director Jon Avnet (Fried Green Tomatoes) about bringing the controversial case study to life and the importance of properly depicting paranoid schizophrenia in film and TV.

Based on the case study Three Christs of Ypsilanti by psychologist Milton Rokeach, the film follows Dr. Alan Stone as he heads to Ypsilanti State Hospital in Michigan and begins a study of three paranoid schizophrenics who all claim they are Jesus Christ, albeit each displaying very different characteristics and delusions. As he works to help break them of these delusions, he also pushes back against a medical system that would rather go for more barbaric tactics to try and cure them.

Richard Gere (Pretty Woman) leads the cast as Stone that also includes Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Walton Goggins (The Righteous Gemstones) and Bradley Whitford (Get Out) as the three patients, Juliana Margulies (The Good Wife) as Stone’s wife, Kevin Pollak (The Usual Suspects) as Dr. Orbus, Stephen Root (Get Out) as Dr. Rogers and Jane Alexander (The Good Fight) as Dr. Abraham.

Avnet directed the film on a script he wrote with The Blue Hour‘s Eric Nazarian and also produces the project alongside Daniel Levin, Molly Hassell, and Aaron Stern. The film originally premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival and is set to hit select theaters and VOD on January 10.

Three Christs acts as a reunion between the 70-year-old filmmaker stars Gere and Whitford with whom he worked on the 1997 mystery thriller Red Corner, and Avnet thought the project was perfect to get the trio back together.

“I love working with Richard and I thought he had a great quality for the doctor, which was he’s a very empathic person,” Avnet said. “I hadn’t seen him in a role like that, so I thought he might be good for it. He read the script and he was extremely complimentary about it and we began to work on it together for a year, maybe 15 months before we started shooting. Bradley I had worked with multiple times, he’s a wonderful guy, very funny and a great actor. He actually heard about it and called me and wanted to play Clyde, so we talked about it and I thought well aren’t I the lucky guy that I get to have Bradley? He’s so good.”

One of the things Avnet envisioned while developing the script was exploring each character as a different aspect of what Christ would’ve been in the Bible, saying that much of the dichotomy actually comes from the real material itself.

“The characters came from the book and came from the study and I actually was able to get the transcripts so I had more information than was just in Dr. Rokeach’s book,” Avnet said. “They each carved out an identity and each one had a different aspect of Christ. Part of this all came about because I worked with Martin Scorsese on The Last Temptation of Christ from the first incarnation of it, so I got to hear Marty talk a lot about Christ, about various qualities and what he was trying to do with [Nikos] Kazantzakis’ book, so that influenced me quite a bit as well.”

While Avnet wasn’t able to talk to any of the real people involved, as the patients’ names were both fictionalized and are deceased, but the one person he did get to speak to with whom he found “most interesting” was Dr. Sandra Ball-Rokeach, Milton’s wife.

“That was quite a humbling experience because a number of screenwriters had approached her over the years, and some of them were brilliant screenwriters, Academy Award-winnings screenwriters,” he said. “They all failed in her eyes and it didn’t get made. So when I came, she assumed I would fail as well, since I had much less pedigree, although I did co-write Fried Green Tomatoes, uncredited, which was at least nominated for an Academy Award. But she was very dubious and so we did talk about the experiment, we talked about Dr. Rokeach, talked about a lot of the aspects. This is one story that thankfully for me had a happy ending because when she saw the film, she just loved it. That was probably the most meaningful compliment that I could get because I wanted to capture his spirit and capture what he did, good and bad. Obviously he crossed the line, it’s very clear he crosses the line and it’s very clear he’s aware of it. 20 years after, he wrote an afterward where he excoriated himself for his tactics, but I think he was actually a little too hard on himself, because what I think he accomplished was quite amazing and brilliant, although his methods were not acceptable, nor would they be acceptable today.”

As the novel unveiled many controversial elements of the case study, Avnet felt it was important to “go as far as I could to show both sides” in the tactics used to try and break them of their delusions, because it helps tie into the question of “is giving hope when hope is unlikely unethical?”

“He really was hard on himself with Jane Alexander’s character and I wanted to do that and I wanted you to understand that treating paranoid schizophrenics is extremely difficult,” he said. “But he gave them a number of things that were remarkable, they formed a relationship with him and each other. This is very, very rare that it happens because it’s a primary narcissism, paranoid schizophrenia, and it’s very difficult to get close to them physically and certainly emotionally. So the question I ask is, is it worth it or not? I’m happy for the audience to judge, but I did want to point out as many faces of what the descent was and in many ways, what he says to assistant Becky in the first scene is exactly what happens to her and him.”

In order to properly tell the story of these patients, Avnet worked with psychoanalyst Dr. Aaron Stern on the script to make it as accurate as possible, as he “didn’t want to pretend that what he did was right or wrong,” and wanted to allow audiences to draw their own conclusions while still being entertained, as the trio are “brilliant and they’re funny and they’re erratic.”

“They’re just like you and me, in some way, they are not cogs that should be warehoused and drugged and shocked indiscriminately,” he said. “The key is to laugh with them, if you ever laughed at them, then I failed. That was the job of the actors, that was the job of me, and when I was finishing it, I’m fortunate to have many very talented filmmakers who watched cuts and are very tough on the material, it’s an enormous value. Many of them were very sensitive about exactly what you were saying, don’t go for the laugh, play the action and hope that you will see them and empathize with them first. As you empathize with them, you may laugh, some of the stuff is quite funny, some of the language is both brilliant and hysterical to me. At the end of the movie, he baptized him as Dr. Dung, that’s right out of the book, what’s dung? It’s the lowest thing on the earth, right, fecal matter and it’s funny but you understand it and you understand that Dr. Stone has been humbled.

Avnet recalled the film’s premiere at Toronto, which was attended by 2200 people, many of whom were “so into these characters,” which he describes as a “humbling experience,” and that while he may not be one of his own favorite writers, he does believe he’s crafted a “pretty effective adaptation” and that he’s been working with the independent financiers to help bring this story to the big screen.

“There were a bunch of offers after Toronto, and I would’ve preferred had this come out, three, four months after it, but it became a very protracted experience, which was extremely difficult for me personally,” he said. “The biggest thing was the actors had been very generous to me, where I would quote Blanche DuBois, ‘I live on the kindness of actors.’ They expect that the work will be good and they will be treated professionally and the delay was very, very tough. It’s not easy to get a film into theaters these days, that’s what I wanted, that’s what the financier wanted, so I thank him for that.”

With the film finally heading to screens next month, the main thing Avnet hopes people get out of the film is to not see them as caricatures or as fictitious beings, but rather to remember they are real.

“I wanted them to see these paranoid schizophrenic patients as people, i wanted them to ask themselves the question, you know, who are you and who gets to choose who you can and can’t be,” Avnet says. “That really interested me, how many people can change their name? Women used to change their name when they got married, some do, some don’t now. Is changing your name changing your identity? I wanted to explore that aspect of the mind. It really interested me and I hope that it will be entertaining and provocative.”

According to Variety, FX is in the very early stage of developing a limited series of Stephen King’s classic Carrie.

RELATED: Jerusalem’s Lot: Adrien Brody to Star in Epix’s New Stephen King Series

The novel, King’s legendary debut, centers on Carrie White, a high school teenager picked on by her classmates but with an extraordinary gift: she can move things with her mind. An act of kindness, as spontaneous as the vicious taunts of her classmates, offers Carrie a chance to be normal… Until unexpected cruelty turns her gift into a weapon of horror and destruction that no one will ever forget.

Carrie was previously adapted in 1976 by director Brian De Palma and writer Lawrence D. Cohen. The movie received two Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress in a Leading Role for star Sissy Spacek.

Other adapted versions of the story include 1988’s Broadway show Carrie: The Musical, the 2002 TV movie from David Carson and Bryan Fuller, and the 2013 remake starring Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore, written by Lawrence D. Cohen and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and directed by Kimberly Pierce.

His Dark Materials Season 1 Episode 8 Recap

His Dark Materials Season 1 Episode 8 Recap

In the previous episode of HBO’s His Dark Materials, Lyra and Roger made it to Asriel’s lab to mixed reactions. In His Dark Materials Season 1 Episode 8, the season finale, Asriel explained to Lyra why he was studying Dust.

Original Sin

Lyra and Asriel argued. Her long and arduous journey to save Roger and bring Asriel the alethiometer ended in disappointment. Asriel gave the alethiometer back to Lyra; he hadn’t meant for her to bring it to him. Lyra revealed to Asriel that she knew who her parents were.

After a warm moment with Roger in the blanket fort they built, Asriel woke Lyra to speak with her, at Thorold suggestion. He told her that the Magisterium interpreted Dust as original sin for centuries. Because of this belief, they preached that Dust was evil and used this “knowledge” to subjugate people. Mrs. Coulter believed that when she cut away children’s demons, she was preserving their uncorrupted selves and saving them from sin. Asriel was studying Dust to prove the Magisterium wrong and, in doing so, end their oppressive rule. He would go to the other worlds where Dust appeared to come from.

Energy

His Dark Materials Season 1 Episode 8 Recap

Thorold woke Lyra as Mrs. Coulter and the Magisterium forces were on their way. Asriel and Roger had gone on ahead, but Thorold would keep Lyra safe. Asriel had mentioned that the intercision process expelled a great deal of energy. Lyra realized that Asriel wanted to cut Salcilia away from Roger and use the resulting energy to open up the portal to other worlds.

Lyra refused Thorold’s help and called for Iorek. He gathered the rest of the bears to accompany him. As they got closer to the mountain, the Magisterium forces on airships opened fire on them. The bears countered as Iorek brought Lyra up the mountain. When they came across a bridge that Iorek couldn’t cross, they said heartfelt goodbyes and parted ways.

By the time Lyra arrived, it was too late to save Roger. Salcilia disappeared, and Roger died. The energy knocked Lyra out. Marisa Coulter arrived just as Asriel was about to cross through the portal. He urged her to come with him and help him destroy the Magisterium’s power. She refused because she would be abandoning Lyra. Asriel walked through the portal. Lyra hid from Marisa and went to Roger’s body. She resolved to not let his death be in vain and walked through the portal.

BOLO

His Dark Materials Season 1 Episode 8 Recap

Boreal received the answer to the question he asked the alethiometer about what Grumman had discovered. There is a knife in a tower surrounded by angels, and his son would lead him to it. Fra Pavel believed that the message needed further interpretation since the Magisterium didn’t know about Will. Boreal yelled at the Pale-Faced Man for letting Will get away. The Pale-Faced Man was a detective inspector and issued a BOLO for Will. Will avoided police officers and came across the tear that Boreal used to move between worlds. He entered the portal.

Rating:

7/10

Cast:

Saoirse Ronan as Jo March
Emma Watson as Meg March
Timothée Chalamet as Theodore ‘Laurie’ Laurence
Florence Pugh as Amy March
Eliza Scanlen as Beth March
Laura Dern as Marmee March
Tracy Letts as Mr. Dashwood
Bob Odenkirk as Mr. March
James Norton as John Brooke
Louis Garrel as Friedrich Bhaer
Chris Cooper as Mr. Laurence
Jayne Houdyshell as Hannah
Meryl Streep as Aunt March

Directed by Greta Gerwig

Summary:

“Little Women” is based upon the 1868 novel by Louisa May Alcott.

During the Civil War, the patriarch of the March family is away at war while his wife and daughters must make ends meet on their own. They are led by their mother, Marmee, who teachers them compassion and independence in the face of adversity. Jo March is an aspiring writer and the free spirit of the sisters. Meg loves acting and longs for a family of her own. Amy March focuses on popularity and wants to marry for money. Finally Beth is very selfless and a musical talent.

As the March women face the trials and tribulations of life on their own, they grow from childhood to womanhood. And their unique personalities will steer the course of their lives as they venture out on their own.

“Little Women” is rated PG for thematic elements and brief smoking.

What Worked:

OK, I’ll admit that “Little Women” isn’t exactly a movie that typically appeals to me. I usually prefer movies with explosions and apes in them. But “Little Women” is one of my wife’s favorite novels and I owed her after dragging her to every Marvel movie and Star Wars movie this year. But while it wasn’t something I would typically watch, I was pleasantly surprised by this film.

First up, the cast is phenomenal. Packed with favorites, each actress has a moment to shine and brings a unique touch to her character. Most notable for me is Florence Pugh as Amy March. I’m continually amazed by the versatility of this actress. This year she played a wrestler in “Fighting With My Family”, a horror movie victim in “Midsommar”, and she will play a Russian spy in “Black Widow” next year. To see her in corsets and frilly dresses in “Little Women” is quite a change for her, yet she’s equally believable in every role. Here she’s boy crazy, she fights with her sister, and takes advise from her rich spinster aunt played by Meryl Streep. Her performance is one of the more fun ones to watch.

The main spotlight is on Saoirse Ronan as Jo March and she does deliver a fine performance as well. Ronan stays a little more in her lane as a free spirited, aspiring author character. Jo embodies many of the characteristics of Louisa May Alcott, so she’s the heart of “Little Women” in many respects.

Emma Watson plays Meg March. It’s not a big stretch from her characters of Hermione Granger or Belle, but what makes her fun to watch is her interaction with the other actresses. There’s real chemistry between them and they seem to be having fun as they play the sisters. Early in the role Meg is funny and theatrical, but as she gets older she’s weighed down by the burdens of life and her duty as a wife and mother. Watson handles those transitions between her character’s stages in life with great skill.

The rest of the female cast is also impressive. Eliza Scanlen plays Beth March, the fourth sister. Beth is compassionate and has musical talent. She interacts well with the other sisters and Laura Dern who plays Marmee March, her mother. Dern is excellent as well and makes a believable matriarch for these girls. There’s a little bit of her in each of their personalities. Then there’s Meryl Streep as Aunt March. Her interaction with Pugh’s Amy is amusing because the two are polar opposites yet both have one drive – survival.

While the men are all supporting characters in this story, they hold their own against the female cast. Chris Cooper is memorable as Mr. Laurence. Right before watching “Little Women” I watched Cooper in “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”. It was a dramatic transformation for Cooper between the two roles and it was nice to see him as a good guy in “Little Women”. It was equally unusual to see Bob Odenkirk as Mr. March. I love him in “Better Call Saul” so it was quite a change to see him overwhelmed by four daughters here, yet he handles it well. Timothée Chalamet is also good as Theodore ‘Laurie’ Laurence. While we see the young girl’s transition to adulthood, we also see him grow from irresponsible young man into adult. His scenes with Pugh are also memorable.

I asked my wife, a “Little Women” fan, what she thought of this film. She enjoyed it quite a bit. She noted that the storytelling format was interesting. It is told in a series of flashbacks. The flashbacks follow the novel while the scenes in present day reflect more of Alcott’s autobiographical elements of the story. Together you see the real contrast in the characters as they grow and mature. She also liked the fact that the story was not overly sappy, a problem with some of the other adaptations of the novel.

What Didn’t Work:

I honestly have no complaints about “Little Women” other than it’s not my cup of tea. It is well acted, it has beautiful production design, and it’s a solid adaptation of a classic novel.

The Bottom Line:

If you’re a fan of any of the cast or writer and director Greta Gerwig, I think you’ll want to check out “Little Women” in theaters. Fans of the Louisa May Alcott novel should also be happy. And if, like me, your significant other wants to see the film, I think you’ll find it to be one of the more accessible classic literature adaptations.

ComingSoon's Top 10 Films of 2019!

ComingSoon’s Top 10 Films of 2019!

ComingSoon.net is wrapping the year up with a list of our Top 10 Films of 2019, featuring managing editor Max Evry, associate editor Kylie Hemmert, and staff writers Grant Hermanns, Maggie Dela Paz, Jeff Ames and Josh Plainse. Check out all our lists now, and be sure to chime in with your own lists in the comments section below!

Max Evry

1) Knives Out – Rian Johnson crafts a killer mystery, while Daniel Craig reveals the incredible depth of his previously untapped comic ability. Another Swiss watch screenplay by one of our best working filmmakers.

2) Motherless Brooklyn – Edward Norton stars in and directs an old school noir with a labyrinthine plot that delivers dividends in an emotional finale.

3) Under the Silver Lake – This wildly misunderstood and hilarious neo noir satire stars Andrew Garfield as a repulsive LA hipster whose main detective ability is white privilege. No, you’re not supposed to like him, and that’s the point.

4) Parasite – The movie that’s as insightful about haves and have nots that Joker wishes it was. A very clever and ultimately heartbreaking look at a family trying to reach beyond their place in the world.

5) The Man Who Killed Don Quixote – Terry Gilliam’s three decade effort to bring his spin on Cervantes’ classic finally bore fruit. Although hampered by its budget, the director’s one-of-a-kind imagination never fails to inspire, as does Jonathan Pryce’s performance.

6) The Nightingale – The Babadook’s Jennifer Kent showed her versatility outside the horror genre with this weighty, unwavering story of revenge for a truly heinous crime in 19th century Tasmania. Aisling Franciosi is riveting in the lead role and Sam Claflin dares to be truly repugnant, but it’s Baykali Ganambarr as Aboriginal tracker Billy who is the heart of the film.

7) Climax – A film that almost demands to be seen in theaters, Gaspar Noé crafted an intense nonstop experience of a dance company drugged into literal oblivion. Sofia Boutella is sensational.

8) Jojo Rabbit – Taika Waititi created this relevant look at the final days of World War II in Germany, and the toll the Nazis took on their own people.

9) The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot – Don’t let the title fool you, this genre mashup is no B-movie. In fact, Sam Elliott is so dedicated to his role it’s kind of amazing he’s had so little awards attention. Robert D. Krzykowski crafted a truly epic film with reportedly less than a million dollars, and we can’t wait to see what he does next.

10) Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark – This film stayed true to the spirit of the YA folklore collections while slyly crafting an original story around them that -like the books- never talks down to the young audience it was made for.

Kylie Hemmert

1) Joker – The compelling and controversial comic book origin story from Todd Phillips maintains a tricky balance between humanizing Arthur Fleck so you feel a little sorry for him, but not enough to where you can legitimately excuse or justify the majority of his horrific actions. Joaquin Phoenix’s gritty performance makes a lasting impact as Arthur descends into self-destruction and becomes the villain (and unreliable narrator) of his own story.

2) Rocketman – The multitalented Taron Egerton is electrifying in this imaginative fantastical docudrama musical that dives deep into Elton John’s complex, often dark, rise to the top that makes his life story all the more heartbreaking and inspiring.

3) IT Chapter Two – Besides a wonderful adult cast joining our favorite young Losers Club and featuring an even more hungry and arguably ruthless Pennywise, what makes the film such a fitting sequel isn’t the horror, but the focus on the bonds of friendship and the importance of found family united together.

4) Booksmart – Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever are a perfect duo in Olivia Wilde’s high school movie that is clever, hilarious, vibrant, inclusive, heartwarming, and features a delightful scene-stealing Billie Lourd.

5) Endgame – Endings are hard, and considering the decades worth of story building before closing out the massive Infinity Stone saga and moving into a new phase for the MCU, the Russo brothers pulled off one hell of a feat and an epic battle we’ll never forget.

6) Knives Out – Rian Johnson’s delightful, funny, clever, and twisty whodunnit with a stellar cast and narrative was exactly the kind of fun we needed to close out the year.

7) Ready or Not – Samara Weaving is an absolute gem in this surprising horror-comedy that gives the scary movie crowd their own feel-good movie of the year — and one of the best, demented twist endings ever.

8) Midsommar – Ari Aster’s follow-up to Hereditary proved once again that Aster is one of the most original filmmakers around, not afraid to rely on the surreal and bizarre to amp up the horror without ever losing sight of the characters or the plot. Aster’s projects have a habit of guiding viewers through a visceral experience that will leave you thinking about the movie for days, and trust me, this one lingers.

9) Us – From the same mind that brought us the essential movie Get Out, Jordan Peele tackled another original horror tale combining social and political commentary with themes of family and duality and a stunning performance by Lupita Nyong’o.

10) Doctor Sleep – Rising master of horror Mike Flanagan brilliantly melded this movie as a sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining film as well as an adaptation of Stephen King’s book in an unexpected and beautiful take on King’s classic story. Ewan McGregor, Kyliegh Curran, and Zahn McClarnon are wonderful in the film as Rebecca Ferguson gives the performance of her career playing one of the most captivating antagonists ever.

Grant Hermanns

1) Knives Out – Rian Johnson proves that a killer ensemble and murder mystery can go hand in hand with this carefully crafted masterpiece led by the powerful Ana de Armas and hilarious drawling Daniel Craig.

2) Rocketman – Rather than a standard biopic of an iconic musician, Dexter Fletcher’s Elton John biopic sets itself apart from others in the genre, namely the recent Bohemian Rhapsody, with its stellar direction and visual effects, fantastical musical numbers and a breathtaking performance from Taron Egerton.

3) The Lighthouse – After conjuring up fear with The Witch, Robert Eggers revvs up the dread and awe in this psychological Lovecraftian thriller that features haunting direction and powerhouse performances from Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe.

4) Parasite – While typically known for adding his satirical voice to more large-scale epics, Bong Joon-Ho takes a more lowkey and realistic approach to telling a darkly comedic and chillingly real tale that is wildly original and unpredictable.

5) Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – Quentin Tarantino has delivered almost nothing but masterpieces throughout his career, and while his love letter to a forgotten Hollywood doesn’t reach the heights of some of his other efforts, it mostly succeeds thanks to the writer/director’s clear fondness for the time period, brilliant characters and stellar ensemble cast.

6) Ready or Not – Much like You’re Next six years ago, the horror-comedy genre saw another major reinvention with the outrageously funny and thrilling gorefest Ready or Not that keeps viewers on the edge of their seat from start to finish and features a wonderful performance from Samara Weaving.

7) Avengers: Endgame – After a decade of bringing various characters to life, Marvel Studios said goodbye to a few key players in its Marvel Cinematic Universe with Avengers: Endgame. Acting as an exhilarating blockbuster, a moving sendoff for some heroes and even a rousing comedy, the box office smash was one of the highest-anticipated and celebrated of the year.

8) John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum – The Keanu Reeves-starring action franchise has been on a hot streak since its debut outing and found its most exhilarating and thrilling footing with this year’s third chapter, Parabellum. Tripling up on the hard-hitting action of the series and featuring Reeves’ most powerful performance yet as the titular gunman, the film marked itself as the best of the series and one of the best this year.

9) Doctor Sleep – Mike Flanagan has established himself as one of the best contemporary horror directors and showed his true storytelling talent with The Shining novel and film sequel Doctor Sleep. Featuring his rich and stylish direction, a captivating story and compelling performances from Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson, it proved to be a worthy and faithful follow-up to both Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece and Stephen King’s iconic novel.

10) The Peanut Butter Falcon – This year has seen the resurgence of former Transformers star Shia LaBeouf and one of the richest and most heartwarming is the adventure dramedy The Peanut Butter Falcon. With a sweet-natured tone, warm direction, innocent humor and stellar performances from LaBeouf and Zack Gottsagen, this Tom Sawyer-esque tale is a beautiful ode to an oft-unexplored area of America.

1) Parasite – Bong Joon-Ho delivers yet again another brilliant and well-crafted story that portrays the differences of social classes in a smart and entertaining way that will leave you hook on every shot. Parasite has a lot of symbolisms in each of its scenes and they were beautifully captured and smartly-executed that the film easily fulfilled the messages that Bong wanted to convey to the audience.

2) Booksmart – The film is a fresh new take on the coming-of-age comedy that is reminiscent of iconic teen films such as: 1980s’ Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and 2000s’ Superbad which centers mainly on growing-up and friendship. However, Olivia Wilde’s feature directorial debut isn’t just your typical high school drama because this film perfectly represents the new generation and tells it in a good-natured humor that is witty, honest and isn’t offensive. In addition to its great story and diverse ensemble cast that blends well with each other, Booksmart’s cinematography was so modern and visually fun and colorful which really suited the storytelling.

3) The Farewell – The heart-warming film offers a closer and authentic look at the struggles of growing-up in two different cultures and how it clashes every time when you need to make a decision about something in your life. The Farewell also highlights Awkwafina’s versatility as an actress, revealing that her talents aren’t only limited to comedy films. The actress, who recently received her first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress, had proven that not only can she excel in light-hearted and fun scenes but she could also effectively command emotional and dramatic scenes.

4) Marriage Story – The film goes through the painful and heartbreaking process of divorce and how it will make you realize that sometimes love isn’t always enough. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson’s incredible and moving performances as Charlie and Nicole were what really made the film work. Scene after scene will inevitably make you sympathize and root for their characters by leaving you confused on whose side to take or whose side is the most reasonable one.

5) Peanut Butter Falcon – The chemistry between Shia LaBeouf and Zack Gottsagen throughout the film was remarkable. That’s why the friendship or the bond that their characters had formed, felt so honest and pure. If you want to watch something when you’re having a bad day, this would be the perfect feel-good movie for you because it will definitely leave you with positive feelings at the end of the film.

6) Extreme Job – Directed by Lee Byeong-Heon, the action-comedy film is currently the highest grossing and the second most-viewed film in South Korea. It follows the story of a failing detective team, who was given one last chance to redeem themselves and to prevent the impending disbandment of their Narcotics squad. Overall, Extreme Job is a really fun and entertaining film that is an instant hit due to its fast-paced scenes that are laced with wit and quirkiness. It most importantly featured a great main cast, who skillfully portrayed their characters’ different personalities and effectively showcased their squad’s strong teamwork that will definitely make you root for all of them from their first scene together up until their last.

7) Us – Coming off from the success of 2017’s Get Out, Jordan Peele creates another memorable horror thriller with Us which only further proves his brilliant talent and creativity as a storyteller. This film gives an in-depth look on the idea that our greatest enemy will always be ourselves. Lupita Nyong’o’s powerful performances as Adelaide and Red were truly remarkable. She absolutely had steal the show, especially on the big ending twist which will make you question everything you’ve learned from watching the film.

8) Crawl – This suspense thriller combines two conflicts: Man vs. Beast and Man vs. Nature which had brought the film’s stakes into a higher level. Director Alexandre Aja somehow made those two elements work really well with the storyline’s father and daughter drama. Crawl’s success also proves that you don’t always need to have a bigger budget to create action-packed and thrilling sequences.

9) Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

10) Avengers: Endgame

1) The Irishman – Martin Scorsese’s quiet, evocative legacy project paints a gripping portrait of the mob; humanizes and even cares for the men behind such political figures as JFK and Jimmy Hoffa. Scorsese makes us sympathize with these wise guys even as they blow each other’s heads off. Robert DeNiro is sensational — that kid has a bright future in Hollywood.

2) Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – If not for The Irishman, I would easily slot Quentin Tarantino’s equally evocative legacy-ish project in the top spot. Though QT’s trademarks are on full display, this definitely feels like the man pulling back on his sensibilities in favor of a film steeped in melancholy and hope.

3) Knives Out – Rian Johnson’s clever whodunnit delves deep into political allegory without sacrificing entertainment value. Come for Daniel Craig’s ludicrous southern accent, stay for the sharp commentary. Prepare to be delighted.

4) Joker – The year’s most surprising film, Joker supplied the award-worthy Joaquin Phoenix performance we all expected but usurped said expectations by delivering perhaps the best comic book film since The Dark Knight. Like its titular character, Todd Phillips’ crime drama is lean, mean, and crazy as Hell. Robert DeNiro is sensational — that kid has a bright future in Hollywood.

Note: this is where my list takes a turn. The remaining films are all good, but certainly not great — it’s hard for a father of two Frozen fan girls to see films like JoJo Rabbit.

5) John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum – John Wick 3 continues the Keanu Reeves-led revenge saga, except this time formulaic cracks begin to show. Oh sure, the stunts are wicked great and the fight choreography (that knife scene!) remains top notch. Except, where the first film saw Wick inflict his holy wrath solo, each subsequent film continues to pile on additional baggage characters who end up diminishing the boogeyman’s legacy.

6) Us – Jordan Peele’s clever follow up to Get Out runs out of story about midway through, but still manages to end on a truly haunting Hitchcockian note. Lupita Nyong’o runs away with the film in an utterly astounding performance that deserves more recognition than it has received.

7) Doctor Sleep – Speaking of thrillers … Doctor Sleep is perhaps the first film in a long time that truly startled me. Mike Flanagan does a fine job crafting a sequel to The Shining that honors Stephen King’s text as well as Stanley Kubrick’s cold-hearted classic film. Kyliegh Curran steals the show as Abra.

8) Ford v Ferrari – Like the cars zipping around the picture-esque country sides in James Mangold’s film, Ford v Ferrari is solid and sturdy, but far from exceptional. You watch it. Admire the craft and performances (particularly Christian Bale). Tip your hat and go home. Dare I say: old fashioned to a fault?

9) Ready or Not – Samara Weaving’s star-making turn rescues Ready or Not from the doldrums of typical slasher fare. An entertaining, bloody romp that does more with its premise than any of us had any right to expect.

10) Klaus – It’s weird that the best animated film of the year arrived on Netflix. Klaus is far from perfect, but in a year that saw another final Toy Story film, an underwhelming Frozen sequel, and far too many ho-hum animated fare in the vein of The Secret Life of Pets 2, not to mention that god-awful Lion King remake, Klaus stands out as something of a unique accomplishment. Its story feels fresh. The animation is glorious. Add in a voice cast that includes Jason Schwartzman (doing his best David Spade impersonation), Rashida Jones, J.K. Simmons and Norm MacDonald and you’ve got yourself a scrumptious holiday treat.

1) Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – A meticulous salud to all of the things that made Quentin Tarantino fall in love with film-making in the first place; arguably is most best and most personal work to date.

2) Ford v Ferrari – James Mangold and company made the old school “dad genre” entertaining and relevant again. Led by some truly resonant performances and moments.

3) Avengers: Endgame – You can’t help but admire what Marvel has been able to accomplish with their culmination of 22 films; especially in the wake of The Rise of Skywalker’s supposed shortcomings, Kevin Feige, the Russos, Stephen McFeely, and Christopher Markus look like a shiny new toy under the Christmas tree.

4) Knives Out – So Rian Johnson comes off of a huge franchise (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), a film that many found to be a huge departure from your typical Star Wars mumbo jumbo, with this gem? A unique, hilarious, and satisfying whodunnit? I salute the man’s fortitude.

5) JoJo Rabbit – No one can beat Taika Waititi’s signature irreverence. JoJo Rabbit will be the first of many masterpieces to come from this quirky think tank in the coming years.

6) Uncut Gems – The Safdie brothers blended real-world basketball (events), high stakes gambling, weirdly psychedelic imagery, and a resurrecting performance by Adam Sandler in an entertaining, anxiety-inducing, and brutal film.

7) Ad Astra – Ad Astra could be written off as slow and unsatisfying but it’s the film’s subversion of space-opera expectations and poignant message that make something to write home about (not to mention Brad Pitt’s subtle insecurities).

8) The Lighthouse – Crazy. Beautiful. Gripping. Awesome.

9) Marriage Story – The realest thing I’ve watched in quite some time…which has cemented my decision to stay single until the last possible sentence.

10) Dolemite Is My Name – Welcome back Eddie Murphy.
