Martin Scorsese's The Irishman World Premiere Set for 57th New York Film Festival

Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman World Premiere Set For 57th New York Film Festival

Film at Lincoln Center has released that Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman world premiere will take place on the opening night of the 57th New York Film Festival, which takes place between September 27-October 13.

RELATED: Netflix’s The Irishman Teaser Reveals Fall Release Date

“The Irishman is so many things: rich, funny, troubling, entertaining and, like all great movies, absolutely singular,” said New York Film Festival Director and Selection Committee Chair Kent Jones. “It’s the work of masters, made with a command of the art of cinema that I’ve seen very rarely in my lifetime, and it plays out at a level of subtlety and human intimacy that truly stunned me. All I can say is that the minute it was over my immediate reaction was that I wanted to watch it all over again.”

Robert De Niro headlines The Irishman as mob hitman Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, reputed to have carried out more than 25 murders. Al Pacino will portray infamously slain labor leader Jimmy Hoffa in what will mark the Academy Award winner’s first time working with Scorsese. It has also been reported that The Irishman may employ extensive (and expensive) digital de-aging techniques so the older actors can portray their characters through the decades. Joe Pesci, meanwhile, will portray Pennsylvania Mafia boss Russell Bufalino, who may have had a hand in the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa. Ray Romano will play another member of the same crime family, Bill Bufalino. Bill Bufalino works as a Teamster lawyer.

Tickets for the 57th New York Film Festival will go on sale to the general public on September 8. Festival and VIP passes are on sale now and offer one of the earliest opportunities to purchase tickets and secure seats at some of the festival’s biggest events, including Opening Night. Support for Opening Night of the New York Film Festival benefits Film at Lincoln Center in its non-profit mission to support the art and craft of cinema.

Steve Zaillian (Schindler’s ListAmerican Gangster) penned the script based on the novel “I Heard You Paint Houses” by Charles Brandt. You can purchase the novel here.

Netflix will finance and distribute The Irishman to theaters for an Oscar-qualifying run. De Niro, Fabrica’s Gaston Pavlovich, Jane Rosenthal, Scorcese, Randall Emmett, and Emma Tillinger Koskoff will produce.

The Irishman will arrive in theaters and on Netflix this fall.

Stranger Things Season 3 Episode 7 Recap

Stranger Things Season 3 Episode 7 Recap

In the previous episode of Netflix’s Stranger Things, Dustin and Erica came to Steve and Robin’s rescue, while Eleven found the Mind Flayer at Brimborn Steelworks. In Stranger Things Season 3 Episode 7, the Mind Flayer headed for the cabin, while Dustin, Erica, Steve and Robin tried to find their way out of the mall.

Cabin Attack

The Mind Flayer headed for the cabin, and the group prepared for the attack. Tentacles came through the cabin, and El was able to use her powers to tear them apart. It grabbed her leg and held on. She split the Mind Flayer’s “head” in half, and Mike tore the tentacle off her leg, revealing a deep wound.

They all escaped the cabin and broke into a grocery store. Accustomed to gruesome injuries from skateboarding, Max led the charge in treating Eleven’s injury. When El was feeling better, Mike was desperately trying to tell her how he feels about her. At that moment, Dustin finally came through on the radio. Unfortunately, the batteries in Dustin’s radio were failing, and they couldn’t get much information. They all left, and Lucas took an arsenal of fireworks with him.

The Cinema

Stranger Things Season 3 Episode 7 Recap

Dustin and Erica had to babysit drugged Robin and Steve, as they escaped the Russian underground fortress. The Russians guarded the loading dock, so they ducked into the Employees Only hallway. They snuck into the movie theater and into a showing of Back to the Future. Unfortunately, they had to sit separately, and Dustin and Erica lost Steve and Robin. They ran into the restroom to vomit. While on the restroom floor, Steve confessed to Robin that he liked her. Unfortunately, when Robin had said she was obsessed with him, it wasn’t because she liked him. Robin liked a girl, who had liked him.

When the movie ended, Dustin, Erica, Steve, and Robin tried to blend with the crowd exiting. However, the Russians were monitoring the crowd. They hid in the food court, but when the Russians were close, the rest of the group arrived. Eleven flung a car at them. Unfortunately, the reunion was cut short with Eleven in distress.

Fourth of July Carnival

On his way back to Bauman, Grigori found him and shot him in the stomach with a silenced gun. Horrified, Bauman searched for Hopper and Joyce, who were stuck in the Gravitron. When they got back to Alexei, he was dead, and the Russians were after them. Hopper headed into the fun house, where he fought them.

Made for Love: Cristin Milioti to star in HBO Max series adaptation

Deadline is reporting that Tony nominee Cristin Milioti (Black Mirror, Fargo, The Wolf of Wall Street) will star in Made for Love, a new straight-to-series half-hour project headed to HBO Max.

RELATED: WarnerMedia Developing Gossip Girl Spinoff for HBO Max

Based on Alissa Nutting’s tragic/comedy novel, Made for Love is a dark, absurd, and cynically poignant story of divorce and revenge. The series, from Patrick Somerville (Maniac, The Leftovers) and Paramount TV, will show how far some will go for love and much further others will go to destroy it.

It follows Hazel Green (Milioti), a thirtysomething woman on the run after 10 years in a suffocating marriage to Byron Gogol, an unstable, needy, possibly sociopathic tech billionaire. Soon she discovers that her husband has implanted a revolutionary monitoring device — the Made for Love chip — in her brain, allowing him to track her, watch her and know her thoughts and feelings as she tries to stay alive. Also, there are dolphins. The chip allows Byron unprecedented access to Hazel’s brain as she flees to her desert hometown to take refuge with her aging widower father and, alarmingly, his sex doll.

S.J. Clarkson (Game of Thrones prequel, Collateral) will direct and executive producer. Somerville will write the series and is serving as showrunner. Executive producers also include Clarkson, Nutting, 3dot Productions’ Liza Chasin, and Dean Bakopoulos.

In Sweet Girl, Momoa will play a husband who vows to bring justice to the people responsible for his wife’s death while also protecting his daughter.

The movie is written by Gregg Hurwitz and Philip Eisner, with current revisions by Will Staples. Brian Andrew Mendoza is directing the project, which will serve as his feature directorial debut. Mendoza and Momoa previously worked together on 2018’s Braven and Netflix’s Frontier series.

“I’m excited to partner with Netflix once again. I’m putting a dream team together from Brad and Jeff to my best friend, Brian, who has been my partner for over 10 years. It’s a dream come true to collaborate with him and deliver his vision,” said Momoa.

Brad Peyton and Jeff Fierson of ASAP Entertainment will produce alongside Momoa. Martin Kistler will serve as executive producer.

“Brad and I are ecstatic about bringing another project to Netflix, who have truly made us feel like we have a home to make groundbreaking original features and series,” Fierson added. “Additionally, Jason and Brian are like family, so to re-team with them on a movie after working for three seasons of Frontier, is a dream come true. When we first read this script, we knew there was only one actor who could bring the gravitas and depth to the role of Cooper, and that’s Jason.”

NOS4A2 Season 1 Finale Recap

NOS4A2 Season 1 Finale Recap

NOS4A2 Season 1 wrapped with a two-part season finale. After escaping from Bing’s basement in the previous episode, Vic warned Craig not to go after Bing. However, as soon as Vic takes the Shorter Way to Iowa in order to save Maggie, Craig grabs a bat and heads to Bing’s house to kill him. Craig loses the element of surprise and overpowers Craig, taping his wrists, ankles, and mouth and throwing Craig in the trunk of his car to prove Bing’s commitment to Manx. Vic returns to Haverhill with Maggie when Craig doesn’t return her texts. The two go to Bing’s house and find signs of a fight but no one at home. Vic takes the Shorter Way to find the Wraith while Maggie stays behind and calls the police to report that Bing has abducted Vic and Craig.

Sleigh House

NOS4A2 Season 1 Finale Recap

Manx is upset with Bing for abducting Vic. Bing says that Vic doesn’t belong in Christmasland because Bing found drugs and condoms in Vic’s room. Bing produces Craig to corroborate what he found. Craig says that he loves Vic and that wherever this is going, she’ll find him and kill Manx. With Vic “ruined”, Manx has no more use for her as mother to his kids in Christmasland, but she and Craig can still be fed to the kids. Manx tells Bing to get as much sevoflourane as he can and leave town before the police find him.

Detective Hutter doesn’t believe that Maggie is telling the whole story regarding herself, Vic, Craig, and Bing. Inside Bing’s house, the police find Bing’s old footlocker with the nail gun. Hutter puts out an APB on Bing, bit Bing manages to slip past them and get out of town. When Hutter asks for the full story, Maggie tells her that she, Vic, and Manx are connected to powerful forces that Hutter can’t understand. Maggie shows her ability with the tiles, leading Hutter to believe her.

Vic arrives at a two-story farmhouse with a detached carriage house. In the carriage house, she finds the Wraith. Craig is still trapped in the trunk. Bradley, Manx’s latest abductee, tries to hold Vic and alert Manx that she’s here. Vic runs into the house to find the key to unlock the trunk and free Craig, Bradley chasing her and trapping her inside. Meanwhile, Manx finds Vic’s bike and tosses it back across the bridge, causing both to disappear and leaving Vic without a means of escape.

Vic barricades herself in the laundry room. Unable to get to her, Manx sets his house on fire to kill Vic. Vic cannot get out of the laundry room because of the fire and is forced to inch her way up the laundry chute to the second floor. From the second floor window, Vic watches the Wraith pull away with Craig still trapped in the trunk. Vic crawls out of the second floor window and out of the house, making her way to the nearest road, where she is picked up by a passing motorcyclist.

Gunbarrel

NOS4A2 Season 1 Finale Recap

Lou takes Vic to a gas station and store in the town of Gunbarrel, Colorado. She tells the store owner to call the police, reporting the abduction and the fire. Vic calls Maggie at the police station, relaying her location and that Manx got away. Maggie asks her tiles where the Wratih is located when Vic sees it pull into the station for a fill up. Craig has worked the duct tape off of his hands and feet, found a tire iron in the trunk of the Wraith, and punched a hole through the floor, puncturing the gas tank.

Vic and Lou confront Manx. Craig punches through the trunk into the back seat of the Wraith, where Bradley attacks him. Vic tries to pull Craig into the front of the Wraith and out the front door, but the field separating the front from the back won’t let Craig through. Manx has neutralized Lou by telling Lou that he knows all about him. Manx manages to get Lou’s gun and turns to Vic, but Vic has sprayed the Wraith in gasoline and is holding a lighter above the hood. Manx lowers the gun, but Vic torches the car anyhow. In an instant, Manx reverts to his older form, his skin blistering and burning as the Wraith burns. Vic goes to get a fire extinguisher to put out the flames before they reach the back seat, but the perforated gas tank explodes, killing Bradley and Craig.

In the hospital, Lou is at Vic’s side and tells her before he is discharged to give him a call if she is ever in Colorado and needs a sidekick. Before Vic is discharged, she is told that she is a couple of weeks pregnant.

Back in Haverhill, Vic and her mother attend Craig’s funeral. Others of their classmates are laughing and telling stories about Craig at the reception. Vic asks her mother what she would have done without Chris around. Linda says that she would have had to live with her mother, and that the two of them didn’t have a very good relationship. Craig’s mother tells Vic that this town is terrible and that she wants Vic to leave and be the artist that Craig said she should be. On her way out of town, Vic says goodbye to Maggie, who is going to stick around and help Hutter look for Bing.

Vic returns to Gunbarrel, where she lives and works with Lou at the garage. Bing has set up a second House of Sleep, having shaved his beard and gotten both a haircut and a job as a custodian at a dental office. Manx remains in a coma in a prison hospital… until a scrapyard worker fires up the Wraith in an effort to restore the car.

CS Saw 120FPS Gemini Man Footage With Will Smith!

CS saw 120FPS Gemini Man footage with Will Smith!

Paramount Pictures invited ComingSoon.net to the Paramount lot in Los Angeles to be among the first audience in the world to see extended Gemini Man footage, and in eye-popping 120 frames-per-second 3D! Director Ang Lee, Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and superstar Will Smith were all on hand to discuss their process in bringing this extraordinary original sci-fi story to life. Check out our rundown of the footage and quotes from the Smith and the filmmakers below!

RELATED: New Gemini Man Trailer Has Smith vs Smith!

“The familiarity we have with the human face is the most of all the things we recognize,” said Lee in his introduction. “For Will Smith, one of the biggest movies stars, to be watched and examined this way takes a lot of courage and heart.”

That was Lee just before the three scenes unspooled, and it was no wonder he was nervous. Not only is he recreating the younger look of one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood using cutting edge CGI technology, he’s screening it at an unforgiving 120 FPS frame rate that makes everything look ten-times more realistic than typical 24FPS.

The first sequence screened was shot in Cartagena, Colombia and involves the older assassin Henry Brogen (Smith) being pursued by his younger clone Junior (also Smith via CGI performance capture developed by WETA Digital). It starts with Henry telling a sleeping Danny Zakarweski (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) that there’s a sniper on the roof and he’s going to distract him so she and Baron (Benedict Wong) can get away. “You’re a shitty houseguest, you know that?” says Baron. Smith goes outside and spies Junior in a reflection in a puddle and shoots through his own shirt to draw the fire of the shooter. At one point Henry has Junior in his sights for a killshot but then notices that he looks EXACTLY like him, but younger. Instead of killing him, Henry leads Junior into a villa where a firefight ensues. It should be noted that the scene was extremely vivid in 120 FPS, and took a few minutes to adjust to the window-like realism and lack of motion blur. Smith tells Junior to stop and that he doesn’t want to shoot him, but then Junior asks, “Do you mind if I shoot you.” “I could have killed you on the roof,” replies Henry. “Maybe you should have,” says Junior. Henry then throws a grenade at him but Junior shoots it away before it explodes.

The second scene picks up with Junior having taken Danny hostage in an underground catacomb full of human skulls and bones. Junior sets up a tripwire then knocks out all the lights, then puts on a mask with night vision. He zip-ties her hands, and explains that Henry has cracked and killed eight operatives. Danny explains that those eight ops were sent by Gemini to kill Henry and her. Junior puts tape over her mouth and then hears the tripwire explosion and runs toward it, but Henry knocks him down and takes his weapons. The two stare at each other with befuddlement. Henry unties Danny, who then lights a flare. “For the record, I do not want to kill you, but I will if I have to,” Henry tells Junior. He then goes on a long speech where he tells him about his boss Varris, and then tells Junior intimate details about himself, including that he hates cilantro, loves puzzles and chess, suffers from insomnia, and the only time he feels happy is when he’s about to squeeze a trigger. He explains that 25 years ago Varris took his blood then cloned him. What’s remarkable about this scene is it’s just the older Smith in the background and then the younger CGI Smith in a tight closeup in the foreground, so you can see every pore of this WETA creation, and it stands up to serious scrutiny. “What are you, 23? Still a virgin, right? Dying to be in a relationship and connect but terrified to let anyone near you because what if somebody actually saw who you are? How could they love you?” He and Junior then get into a major scrap in the catacombs, and because Junior is fully CGI the animators were able to enhance the hits between the two to make it look like they’re really making contact during the fight. And what a fight. It goes on for several minutes with the two grappling for their lives, and Smith telling Danny not to shoot him. They both wind up falling down a shaft and into some water, and that’s when the scene ends.

The third scene involves bad guy Clayton “Clay” Varris (Clive Owen) in a dramatic confrontation with Junior, asking him why it’s so hard for him to kill this man. Junior remembers shooting turkeys at a park with Varris, who he refers to as his father. “I always believed you’d be happier not knowing,” meaning when he’s a clone. Junior says the only time he’s happy is when he’s flat on his belly about to squeeze a trigger, confirming/echoing what Henry said about him. “of all the people in the world to send to kill him why would you send me?” Junior asks. “He’s your darkness, you have to walk through this on your own,” says Varris, who explains that the whole point of this was to give Junior all of Henry’s gifts without his pain, and that he is loved. Junior begins to get visibly emotional, crying and hugging Varris, and the dramatic feel of the effects work here is extraordinary.

“It was really cool for me doing this,” Will Smith told us after the footage presentation. “The team at WETA was pulling all of the old footage so I got to see all of the tragedies I committed in entertainment. (laughs) But it is really great to be able to take a look at myself like that, and to be able to take a look at youth verses experience. What age would you REALLY go back to. The 20’s sucked ass, I’m not going anywhere near my 20’s. (laughs) Maybe my 30’s. It is so beautiful to explore that. In my 20’s I never would have said ‘sucked ass’ in this kind of environment. Now I’m more relaxed, more comfortable in my skin.”

“I would like to make it clear that we’re not de-aging,” clarified Lee. “I’d rather think that we created a new character, a youthful Will Smith. The biggest problem is that Will is a much better actor today than 30 years ago.”

“Ang kept asking me when I was playing Junior, ‘Uhh, I need you to act less good,'” Will Smith said to great laughter. “Then he would show me some of my old performances and say, ‘Look at this, that’s not good, I need you to do that.'”

“I’ve been involved in the project for 10 or 15 years,” said producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who has worked with Smith on three Bad Boys movies and Enemy of the State before this film. “It’s so exciting to bring this to an audience, and so lucky that these two gentlemen have decided to work together. I really feel blessed because you have a world class filmmaker with a world class actor. Their success is not an accident because they put the time in and they have the energy and the talent.”

Distrust, deception, confusion abound with the subject of doubles or clones, but twins can also be the dominion of comedy and zany mix-ups. All of these find representation in our list.

The Walking Dead spinoff teaser hints at a much larger world

We got our first hint at what the second spinoff series from The Walking Dead will have in store. The video features a trio of the show’s stars, who talk about leaving the safe world they grew up in to find out the truth about their world — which happens to be overrun with the dead. We also see some concept art, which features a crashed plane that, you guessed it, is lousy with zombies. You can check it out in the post below!

The untitled spinoff will serve as the third show of the television franchise, following The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead. According to AMC, the series will feature two young female protagonists and focus on the first generation to come-of-age in the apocalypse. Some will become heroes, some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever. Grown-up and cemented in their identities, both good and bad.

Ansel Elgort talks Baby Driver 2

Ansel Elgort Says Baby Driver Sequel Is Going to Happen

Filmmaker Edgar Wright has been floating the idea to make a sequel to his 2017 action romp Baby Driver since it first hit theaters that summer. Now, in an interview with MTV News, actor Ansel Elgort, who played the titular Baby, has said that he’s seen the script for Baby Driver 2, and says that “I think it’s gonna happen.” However, the moniker for the sequel won’t simply add a “2” at the end, it will apparently be something different.

There’s currently no timetable for the sequel, or at least, not one Elgort is aware of, as Wright is currently making Last Night in SoHo. Nonetheless, the young actor seems confident he’ll get to step into the role of Baby once again. Given how the first film ended, however, it will likely be set a few years down the road, after Baby’s granted parole.

Wright, whose previous credits include Shaun of the DeadHot FuzzScott Pilgrim vs. the World and The World’s End, brought together a cast that included Elgort (The Fault in Our StarsDivergent), Kevin Spacey (The Usual Suspects) as Doc, Jon Hamm (Mad MenThe Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) as Buddy, Lily James (Pride and Prejudice and ZombiesCinderella) as Deborah, Eiza Gonzalez (Jem and the HologramsFrom Dusk Till Dawn: The Series) as Darling, Jon Bernthal (Marvel’s DaredevilThe Walking Dead) as Griff, and Jamie Foxx (Django UnchainedThe Amazing Spider-Man 2) as Bats.

The film followed Baby, a prodigy getaway driver who relied on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. When he meets the girl of his dreams (Lily James), Baby sees a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.

Baby Driver grossed over $100 million in the US, and close to $120 million overseas, bringing its grand total to more than $226 million. Considering it was made for a $34 million budget, it would make fiscal sense to ride drive that success into another sequel. Elgort, meanwhile, will star in Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story.

Platform gets pilot order

B.J. Novak anthology series Platform gets pilot order from FX

FX has ordered a pilot for the new anthology series Platform, which will be written, directed and executive produced by B.J. Novak (The Office).

According to Deadline, Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea), Jon Bernthal (The Punisher), Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Ingrid Goes West), George Wallace (Law & Order) and Ed Asner (Doom Patrol) have all signed on to star. Other arrangements are currently being made for other actors as well. FX Productions will serve as the studio.

The pilot, which began filming this week will use the boldest issues of our time as a jumping-off point to tell singular, character-driven stories about the world we live in today. It’s being reported that every episode will have a drastically different tone, much like a true anthology.

Novak starred as temp-turned-executive-turned-temp Ryan Howard on the first eight seasons of The Office, as well as serving as a writer, director and producer on the show. He left in the final season along with Mindy Kaling to focus on her now-canceled series, The Mindy Project, though he did make a couple of cameo appearances in season 9.

He also authored two books, One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories, which was a NYT bestseller, and the kids’ book, The Book with No Pictures.

Cruella may land Paul Walter Hauser

Disney’s live-action Cruella may land Paul Walter Hauser as co-star

The cast of Cruella is starting to take shape. According to The Wrap, Paul Walter Hauser is in talks to join the cast of the live-action film, which centers on the villain from 101 Dalmations, Cruella de Vil, played by Emma Thompson. It’s unclear what role Hauser is currently in talks over.

The actor recently starred in Spike Lee’s Oscar-winning BlacKkKlansman, as well as the 2017 Oscar-winner I, Tonya. He recently wrapped production on Da 5 Bloods for Netflix.

The Cruella De Vil origin story will explore the villainess who first appeared in Dodie Smith’s 1956 book, The Hundred and One Dalmatians. The role was voiced by Betty Lou Gerson in Disney’s 1961 animated adaptation and played by Glenn Close in the 1996 live-action take (as well as in that film’s 2000 sequel, 102 Dalmatians). Smith also briefly revisited the character in her lesser-known science-fiction sequel book, The Starlight Barking.

The long-in-development film will be helmed by I, Tonya director Craig Gillespie.
