William Shatner Is Interested in Reprising Captain Kirk for Tarantino's Star Trek

William Shatner is interested in reprising Captain Kirk for Tarantino’s Star Trek

SYFY Wire brings word that original Star Trek lead William Shatner is interested in reprising his role as Captain James T. Kirk in Quentin Tarantino’s R-Rated Star Trek project, should the filmmaker decide to make the movie.

Shatner said: “If you’re going to do Star Trek, fifty years later, a few pounds heavier, come on, not a problem.” Shatner was joking around about the possibility, noting that he is 88-years-old, but also expressed sincere interest in bringing back his most popular role should he be asked and if he liked the script.

Tarantino has previously said that the reason he loves Star Trek so much is because of Shatner. “I’m a big fan of the show Star Trek. I really like it a lot, but my portal into that show is William Shatner. I love William Shatner on Star Trek. I love his performance as James T. Kirk. That is my connection. That is my umbilical cord. It’s why I like Star Trek more than Star Wars because William Shatner’s not in Star Wars. I think it’s one of the greatest performances in the history of episodic television, of a series lead, and rightly so, because very few series leads have ever gotten the opportunity to play all the different wild, crazy things. ‘The Enemy Within’ alone.”

Tarantino recently spoke about the potential Star Trek film, saying that the movie would be “Pulp Fiction in space,” referencing an interview we at ComingSoon.net did with Simon Pegg a year ago!

“I will say one thing about Star Trek that I’ve been waiting for someone to bring up,” said Tarantino. “I don’t know if I’ll do it or not. I’ve got to figure it out, but Mark wrote a really cool script. I like it a lot. There’s some things I need to work on but I really, really liked it. I get annoyed at Simon Pegg. He doesn’t know anything about what’s going on and he keeps making all these comments as if he knows about stuff. One of the comments he said, he’s like ‘Well, look, it’s not going to be Pulp Fiction in space.’ Yes, it is! [laughs hard]. If I do it, that’s exactly what it’ll be. It’ll be Pulp Fiction in space. That Pulp Fiction-y aspect, when I read the script, I felt, I have never read a science fiction movie that has this sh*t in it, ever. There’s no science fiction movie that has this in it. And they said, I know, that’s why we want to make it. It’s, at the very least, unique in that regard… But there is a gangster element to what we’re doing with the Star Trek thing that works out pretty good.”

The script was written by Mark L. Smith, who penned The Revenant. Smith came aboard the project in December of 2017, after which talk of Tarantino’s Star Trek all but ceased while he worked on finishing Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

As previously reported, the new take on the Enterprise will shoot for an R rating, a notion that has irked some of Star Trek’s core fanbase. However, last year actor Karl Urban, who plays Dr. McCoy in the newer films, explained that the movie would not earn the harder rating via vulgarity or language, but rather through more gritty realism.

Tarantino’s latest film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, is playing now in theaters.

First Wave of 2019 Fantastic Fest Programming Announced

First wave of 2019 Fantastic Fest programming announced

The acclaimed Texas-based genre festival Fantastic Fest is celebrating a major milestone this year as it hits its 15th anniversary and the first wave of programming has been announced for the festival, which will include highly-buzzed about films such as Taika Waititi’s anti-hate satire Jojo Rabbit and Vincenzo Natali’s adaptation of the Stephen King and Joe Hill horror novel In the Tall Grass.

“Our fifteenth year is a one-of-a-kind of celebration of the cinema we champion: brilliant and out-there,” the festival’s Creative Director Evrim Ersoy said. “It’s a 15-year-long love letter to the wide spectrum of daring, crazy films, filmmakers, and audience members whom we host in Austin each September. It’s an ode to the independent spirit of cinema that allows us to showcase the diversity of the world at large and helps us to understand it better!”
Flying into Austin to celebrate the US Premiere of his brilliant, hypnotic, and violently hilarious new film First Love will be none other than Japan’s unmatched movie maestro Takashi Miike, giving the audience the opportunity to join the director in person to discover the film that had Cannes audiences screaming in their seats with pure joy.
Fantastic Fest will continue to bring the best of Cannes to Austin with the US Premiere of alumni Quentin Dupieux’s newest droll and gory wonder Deerskin, starring the ever-amazing Jean Dujardin; the US Premiere of the Romanian noir masterpiece (with a funny streak) The Whistlers from director Corneliu Porumboiu; as well as one of the best discoveries of the year: the magical and highly charged S&M romantic wonder Dogs Don’t Wear Pants.
Traveling across the globe to seek out the best of the best, Fantastic Fest will host the most unusual, challenging, interesting, and wonderful films of the year, including the World Premiere of Peter Van Goethem’s Night Has Come from Belgium which tells of a dystopian future using only archival footage. From Germany comes the North American premiere of Fatih Akin’s searing and brutal examination of a psychopath in ‘70s Hamburg in The Golden Glove. And Argentina delivers the North American Premiere of powerhouse high concept thriller 4X4, pitting a petty thief against an inescapable SUV.
A focus on global female filmmakers provides a quartet of mind-bending features. From Greece, Rinio Dragasaki brings the World Premiere of the shockingly whimsical and brilliantly odd Cosmic Candy. Austria’s Kelly Copper and Pavol Liska tell the story of a very different zombie invasion in the North American Premiere of Der Kinder Der Toten. Italian filmmaker Sara Summa explores the final day of a family in devastating detail in The Last to See Them. And finally, from the USA, Jennifer Reeder brings her singular vision of a high school torn apart by a missing cheerleader in the thrilling Knives and Skin.
Documentaries make a splash at Fantastic Fest with the World Premiere of Wrinkles the Clown, where your greatest real-life nightmares come true… in big, floppy shoes. The World Premiere of Michael Paszt’s Nail in the Coffin: El Vampire Canadiense takes an in-depth look at the man behind the El Vampiro Lucha Libre grease paint, plus Alexandre Philippe’s masterful autopsy of the classic movie Alien in Memory: The Origins of Alien, and the often-hilarious examination of the history of Showgirls in You Don’t Nomi.
Twisted genre comes together in a trifecta of Fantastic Fest films to make you scream. The North America/World premiere of The Cleansing Hour sees a fake exorcist confronted by some very real demons in a highly charged adaptation from the short of the same name; an Argentinian family literally goes to war over their inheritance in the North America Premiere of the black-as-night comedy Rock, Paper, Scissors; and a man finds himself trapped in the deep end while facing a giant alligator in the perfect midnight movie The Pool.
Fantastic Fest alumni are represented in a blitz of titles this year. Ant Timpson returns with his directorial debut Come to Daddy, starring Fest friend Elijah Wood as a man with some severe father issues. Daniel Scheinert explores the meltdown of two men over the death of their friend in the hilarious and strangely moving Death of Dick Long. And Jeremy Gardner along with co-director Christian Stella ask just what is behind the door in the uneasy and masterful blend of genres Something Else.
Finally, AGFA celebrates fifteen years of Fantastic Fest with a beautifully expanded program! Each day of the festival will be treated to a NEW AGFA screening, including the World Premiere of restorations of such outrageous classics as Bloody Birthday. The McPherson Tape, Reflections of Evil, as well as the 4K Restoration of the “gore cut” of the once-seen-never-forgotten Tammy and the T-Rex and a new transfer of Tina Krause’s brilliant and unseen horror nightmare Limbo.

The star will be dedicated in the category of Motion Pictures at 6918 Hollywood Boulevard in front of The Line Store. Helping Emcee Rana Ghadban, President and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to unveil the star will be director J.J. Abrams and singer/songwriter Lana Del Ray.

He has his pulse on a realm of fantasy that has captivated and astounded audiences!” said Ana Martinez, Producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is proud to honor him for his historic film work!”

Guillermo del Toro is among the most creative and visionary artists of his generation whose distinctive style is showcased through his work as a filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, and author. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, he first gained worldwide recognition for the 1993 Mexican American co-production Cronos, a supernatural horror film, which he directed from his own screenplay after beginning his career working as a special effects makeup artist. The film premiered at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Mercedes-Benz Award. It also won over 20 international awards and eight Ariel Awards from the Mexican Academy of Film, including Best Director, Best Screenplay, and the Golden Ariel.

Del Toro’s latest producing project is the CBS Films, eOne and Lionsgate feature Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, based on the books by Alvin Schwartz. André Øvredal directed the film which will be released in theaters everywhere August 9, 2019.

Under his overall deal with Fox Searchlight, he is currently producing Antlers (directed by Scott Cooper and starring Keri Russell). Del Toro’s next live-action film is the period thriller Nightmare Alley which he will direct, produce and co-write for Searchlight. His most recent film, the contemporary fairy tale The Shape of Water, for Fox Searchlight, premiered at the 2017 Venice Film Festival, where it won the Golden Lion for Best Picture. It went on to win Golden Globes, BAFTAs, DGA, PGA and Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design.

Del Toro is also producing, co-writing and co-directing his stop motion adaptation of Pinocchio for Netflix Animation. Currently, he is also developing a series based on Naoki Urasawa’s acclaimed manga series Monster for Sony Television. He will also produce the horror anthology Guillermo del Toro’s 10 After Midnight for Netflix Television.

Del Toro is on the Board of Directors of The Hero Initiative which creates a financial safety net for comic creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. Since inception, the Hero Initiative has been fortunate enough to benefit creators with more than $1 million worth of much-needed aid.

In this case, a member of the High Table who ordered the open contract. John should have already been executed, except the Continental’s manager, Winston (Ian McShane), has given him a one-hour grace period before he’s ‘Excommunicado’ – membership revoked, banned from all services and cut off from other members. John uses the service industry to stay alive as he fights and kills his way out of New York City.

New Joss Whedon Series The Nevers Adds 12 Cast Members

HBO’s upcoming sci-fi drama series The Nevers from Joss Whedon as added 12 actors to its cast, TheWrap has confirmed. The new additions include Olivia Williams (Counterpart), James Norton (McMafia), Tom Riley (Dark Heart), Ann Skelly (Death and Nightingales), Ben Chaplin (The Thin Red Line), Pip Torrens (The Crown), Zackary Momoh (Seven Seconds), Amy Manson (Torchwood), Nick Frost (Fighting with My Family), Rochelle Neil (Terminator: Dark Fate), Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark), and Denis O’Hare (Big Little Lies).

RELATED: Outlander’s Laura Donnelly Set to Lead Joss Whedon’s The Nevers

The stars join the previously announced Laura Donnelly, who will play Amalia True. The series follows a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world.

Williams will play Lavinia Bidlow, a wealthy spinster and champion of the “Touched,” who funds the Orphanage (where Amalia and many of the Touched live) through her vast family fortune. She is stern and old-fashioned, but as strong-willed and clever as anyone she confronts.

James Norton will play Hugo Swann, a pansexual posh boy whose charm has about five years left on its lease. He runs a secret club and a side trade in blackmail. He’s devoted to fulfilling everyone’s worst impression of him and is fascinated by the Touched.

Tom Riley will play Augustus “Augie” Bidlow, a sweet, disarming nerd and Lavinia’s younger brother. A keen ornithologist, Augie is happy to let his older sister take the reins of the family fortune. He finds the Touched unnerving, but is drawn to them by his increasing infatuation with Miss Adair, and by the schemes of his nefarious best friend, Hugo.

Ann Skelly will play Penance Adair, Amalia’s dearest friend and one of the first women to join her cause. A devout — yet heretically progressive — Irish girl, Penance has genius for invention. She is delighted by her power, and her default is love and acceptance. But she’s firm in her moral sense, and will be guided by what’s right over what’s expedient every time.

Ben Chaplin will play Detective Frank Mundi, a big, gruff, and deeply moral man who trusts no one, least of all himself. His reputation for sudden violence (and excessive drink) is not unwarranted. Frank finds himself caught between the powerful, who ignore the laws of the land, and newly empowered, who ignore the laws of physics.

Pip Torrens will play Lord Massen, who is staunch, unflappable and merciless in his defense of the British Empire, this former General, now Peer, may be the only man who sees clearly what havoc these few strange people can wreak upon the established order. Which he will protect, one way or another.

Zackary Momoh will play Doctor Horatio Cousens, one of the few successful West Indian physicians in London. Married with a young son, Horatio’s fortunes took a dark turn when he met Amalia and discovered his own ability. Now he works with her, and with the Beggar King, those who don’t care who is or isn’t “different.”

Amy Manson will play Maladie, who is committed by her husband (and genuinely unstable), and has been warped by a power she can’t understand, and tortured by doctors intent on finding its source. She now lives underground, runs a gang and is on an infamous murder spree. She affects a theatrical parody of a bedlam waif, but mad as she is, she’s a woman with a purpose.

Nick Frost will play Declan Orrun, aka The Beggar King, who is charismatic and brutal. Declan runs, or has a piece of, most of the low-level criminal activity in the city. He’s perfectly happy to help Amalia and her cause – and equally happy to sell them out. He backs winners, and the Touched are long odds.

Rochelle Neil will play Annie Carbey, aka Bonfire. Annie is a career criminal who landed the ability to control fire and is happy to hire it out. Came up rough, stayed that way, but she’s neither impulsive nor cruel – just looking out for herself. No matter who she works with or for, Annie trusts only Annie, and the fire.

Eleanor Tomlinson will play Mary Brighton, a gentle but surprisingly resilient woman who pursued her dream of singing on stage. A disappointing career and a broken engagement haven’t diminished her spirit. She’s going to be great. She’s going to be very surprised how.

Denis O’Hare will play Dr. Edmund Hague, a gifted American surgeon. He uses his skills in the coldest, most brutal way possible. But it’s all in the name of progress!

RELATED: Ballers Season 5 Teaser: It’s Not Where You Start, It’s Where You Finish

Whedon will serve as executive producer, showrunner, writer, and director on the series. Jane Espenson and Doug Petrie also serve as co-writers and executive producers alongside EP Bernie Caulfield.

Robert De Niro in talks for Martin Scorcese’s Killers of the Flower Moon

Deadline has brought word that Martin Scorcese might be reteaming with frequent collaborator Robert De Niro (The Irishman) for the upcoming adaptation of Killers of the Flower Moon as the 75-year-old actor has begun negotiations to star alongside fellow Scorcese alum Leonardo DiCaprio (The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street).

RELATED: Killers Of The Flower Moon: Paramount Acquires Scorsese, DiCaprio Film

Based on the novel of the same name from David Grann (pick it up here!), the film will follow the investigation into the grisly murders of wealthy Osage people in Osage County, Oklahoma in the 1920s shortly after oil was discovered under their land. The FBI, still early in the creation phase, took on the case and discovered a horrible secret behind the spree.

The film, written by Eric Roth (A Star is Born), is produced by Imperative Entertainment, who acquired the rights for the novel for $5 million, as well as Scorcese, Appian Way Productions and Sikelia Productions.

“When I read David Grann’s book, I immediately started seeing it—the people, the settings, the action—and I knew that I had to make it into a movie,” Scorsese previously said. “I’m so excited to be working with Eric Roth and reuniting with Leo DiCaprio to bring this truly unsettling American story to the screen.”

Producers are currently meeting with members of the Osage Nation and are scouting locations for production, which is set to commence sometime during summer 2019.

Killers of the Flower Moon will mark DiCaprio and Scorcese’s seventh collaboration together after working on multiple Oscar-nominated and winning films beginning with 2002’s Gangs of New York followed by 2004’s The Aviator, which was the actor’s first Oscar-nominated performance with the director, 2006’s The Departed, 2010’s Shutter Island, 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street and the 2015 short film The Audition.

While fans will be rushing to the theater to see their favorite cat and mouse scrapping with each other on the big screen, the Tom and Jerry film will also bring audiences in with its ensemble cast. The film has just expanded its cast with the additions of The Hangover‘s Ken Jeong and Deapdool 2‘s Rob Delaney, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film will follow Chloë Grace Moretz (Suspiria)’s Kayla, a new employee at the extravagant Park hotel who hires broke alley cat Tom to get rid of mouse Jerry in an attempt to secure her job. Michael Peña (Ant-Man & the Wasp) has signed on to star as Terrance, the deputy general manager of the hotel who acts as a bully to Kayla and begins clashing with his new employee as she impresses upper management with her battle against the animal duo.

Tim Story is attached to direct and will also produce the pic for Warner Bros. from a script by the writing trio of Katie Silberman, April Prosser and Kevin Costello — though none have officially received credit just yet. The Story Company’s Sharla Sumpter Bridgett will also produce.

This is the first in a series of similarly designed projects from WB with the others being Space Jam 2 from producers Ryan Coogler, Maverick Carter and LeBron James; Scooby Doo, which Chris Columbus is currently overseeing; and a Wile E. Coyote vs. ACME hybrid feature, with Chris McKay from the LEGO universe as creative supervisor.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 Episode 10 Recap

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 Episode 10 Recap

In the previous episode of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, June honored Ofmatthew by vowing to get as many children out of Gilead as she could. In The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 Episode 10, June focused on finding the other Handmaids’ children, while the Gilead way of life finally came for the Lawrences.

Dossiers in the Basement

While at Loaves and Fishes, June tried to spread the word to Alma and her Handmaid allies. However, the Handmaids were called to inspection. The Waterfords were back in town.

Back at the Lawrences’, June looked for Handmaids’ records containing information on where their children ended up. Mrs. Lawrence found her and asked her what she was doing. June admitted what she was looking for, and Mrs. Lawrence showed her to where the Commander stored them in the basement. It had been five years since the rise of Gilead, and June noted how much time the Handmaids had lost with their children.

The Ceremony

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 Episode 10 Recap

Fred persuaded Commander Winslow to look in on the Lawrences during the Ceremony. They wanted proof that the Lawrences weren’t resisting. They had no choice but to take part in it. A doctor would examine June directly after for proof. Mrs. Lawrence was willing to accept their deaths as punishment for their parts in creating Gilead. Unfortunately, June and the Marthas would also be punished for not reporting it. June coached Lawrence into detaching himself from the act. She had a lot of experience with it.

A Way Out

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 Episode 10 Recap

Progress with Nichole had stalled. Fred admitted to Serena that it was better for Gilead, politically, to lengthen the process of pursuing custody. Serena suggested a better way. She showed Fred the phone that Mark Tuello left with her. They could try cutting a deal with him.

The Lost Children of Gilead

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 Episode 10 Recap

June used the horror of what Lawrence was forced to do to persuade him in helping her cause. He could get Mrs. Lawrence out. She would have access to mood stabilizers instead of relying on herbal teas to treat her mental illness. As a war criminal, Joseph couldn’t leave the country with her. However, June pointed out that he could leverage information and the rescue of Gilead’s lost children. He could leave with her too. Joseph agreed to get June a truck to help the children leave.

June told the other Handmaids she wanted to save their children. She lied to Janine about her son, who had died in a car crash. When she arrived home from Loaves and Fishes, Beth had gotten word back from her network of Marthas. There were plenty of them who wanted to help move the children.

The 5 actors Quentin Tarantino uses most

Comingsoon.net is thrilled about Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood, so we’re looking back at director Quentin Tarantino’s filmography to find the actors he uses most. Check out their names in the gallery below!

With Quentin Tarantino’s latest film Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood now playing, it’s definitely worth looking at which actors the filmmaker tends to utilize most often (even if not all of them will be appearing in his ninth film). While often appearing in his movies himself, technically making him the actor Quentin Tarantino uses most, the filmmaker has a steady and trustworthy group of actors he always circles back to, no matter what the film.

The fact that these performers are even able to keep up with Tarantino’s rapid pace and genre-hopping is a feat unto itself. The fact that they’re able to return time and time again to deliver memorable performances is even more impressive. From a former stuntperson to a father-son duo and a few other well-known faces in between, these are the actors Quentin Tarantino uses most.

Euphoria Season 1 Episode 7 Recap

Euphoria Season 1 Episode 7 Recap

In the previous episode of HBO’s Euphoria, Nate blackmailed Jules into helping exonerate him, and Rue took care of Jules while drunk at Daniel’s Halloween party. In Euphoria Season 1 Episode 7, Rue struggled with her bipolar moods, while Jules visited friends in LA.

Manic-Depressive

We saw Rue in two states immediately following the party. In her manic state, she played the Morgan-Freeman-esque detective as she and Lexi tried to work out Jules’s motivation for helping Nate. Rue figured out that Nate had catfished Jules but didn’t realize he was blackmailing her. She believed Jules had fallen for Nate. She went to Fezco, hoping he would use his gun to scare Nate. Fezco told Nate to stop messing with Rue and her friends or he would kill him. At the end of the episode, Fezco and Ashtray frantically flushed drugs while the cops were outside.

In her depressive state, Rue stayed in bed and watched Love Island. She didn’t leave her room after she rudely confronted her mother’s date. Rue’s depression prevented her from urinating. Her mother found her writhing on the floor and took care of her. Rue suggested going back on her medication.

Like a Dream

Euphoria Season 1 Episode 7 Recap

Jules claimed to be sick and was out of school for a week. She texted Rue to let her know everything was fine, but she would be visiting a friend in LA. When her friends asked how she was doing after the move, Jules wanted to avoid the subject. However, she told them about Rue, obviously smitten. Jules hooked up with Anna, who reminded her of Rue.

Advice

Euphoria Season 1 Episode 7 Recap

Rue gave us insight on Cassie’s background. Her parents had an unhappy marriage. After a car accident where he was drunk, her father became addicted to pain medication. She and Lexi lost touch with him. When Cassie last saw him, he’d clearly become a junkie.

Cassie gathered her friends and sister around. She needed advice on if she should tell McKay about making out with Daniel. They all advised her against it. Cassie insisted that she felt too guilty. After they left, Cassie told Lexi that she was pregnant. When Cassie went to McKay, he told her she would make a good mother, but not now.

Naked

Euphoria Season 1 Episode 7 Recap

At the Halloween party, Kat had sex with Daniel. He had been her childhood boyfriend. Unfortunately, he hadn’t remembered it that way.

At Cassie’s, Maddy and Kat got into a vicious argument that led to Kat storming out and the advice council dissolving. At home, she cammed for her anonymous big spender. He disguised his voice and blacked out his camera. She took off all her clothes but soon shut her laptop.

The Irishman teaser shows a hitman who changed history

The first teaser for Martin Scorsese’s return to the world of organized crime, The Irishman, is here, and it shows how one notorious hitman was able to change the course of history. You can check out the trailer in the player below!

Robert De Niro headlines The Irishman as mob hitman Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, reputed to have carried out more than 25 murders. Al Pacino will portray infamously slain labor leader Jimmy Hoffa in what will mark the Academy Award winner’s first time working with Scorsese. Joe Pesci, meanwhile, will portray Pennsylvania Mafia boss Russell Bufalino, who may have had a hand in the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa. Ray Romano will play another member of the same crime family, Bill Bufalino. Bill Bufalino works as a Teamster lawyer.

Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley eye Dungeons & Dragons

According to Deadline, the directing duo of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley of Game Night fame are suiting up to helm another big game-themed extravaganza — the big screen adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons for Paramount and Hasbro’s AllSpark Pictures banner. Obviously nothing is set in stone at the moment, but the trade notes that discussions are currently underway.

Goldstein and Francis Daley scripted Spider-Man: Homecoming for Marvel and were previously attached to direct The Flash for Warner Bros., but ended up exiting the DC project in July.

It was previously reported that Goosebumps director Rob Lettermen would helm the Dungeons & Dragons movie way back in 2016, but that film never materialized and the project has gone through various iterations including one with Lego Batman director Chris McKay.

Role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons first became popular in 1974, and since then has amassed millions of players and fans worldwide. The hugely popular property has also influenced numerous writers, directors, game designers and other creative professionals throughout its four decades. The feature was first announced in 2013 wherein a rights-dispute began between the studio and Hasbro (parent company of publisher Wizards of the Coast), but the issues were resolved last year and the film remains in-development.

First adapted for the small screen as an animated television series in 1983, Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson’s iconic RPG was turned into a live-action feature film in 2000 directed by Courtney Solomon. The film was neither a critical nor financial success, but it did lead to a telefilm sequel with 2005’s Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God and a direct-to-DVD followup with Dungeons & Dragons: The Book of Vile Darkness in 2012.

Alfred Molina to step behind the camera for Lilian

Famed actor Alfred Molina has chosen to make his directorial debut on Lilian, according to Deadline, and will direct from a script by Amy Lowe Starbin (Kelly and Cal) for Cannonball Productions.

The film is based on the Jill Gascoine novel of the same name and follows a woman named Jessica, who survives cancer, and then leaves her family behind in England to visit the United States where she hopes to rediscover happiness — only to fall in love with another woman.

RELATED: Guillermo del Toro to Be Honored with Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

“I’ve always known that I eventually wanted to direct,” Molina said. “When I was young I was moved by the films of Carol Reed—that’s what started this journey in fact—that was the first time I realized there was a guiding hand behind the camera. The idea of being that guiding hand has always interested me.”

Molina chose the project because he felt it was a story that touched him deeply.

“Lilian is such a beautiful story about a woman getting on in years who finds the spark of love and passion again after losing hope and a clear idea of her purpose,” he said. “I’m going to focus all of my energy and passion into bringing this story to life with a wonderful group of artists that I know and trust.”

Ava DuVernay confirms The New Gods movie characters

With a vast pantheon of characters to choose from, Ava DuVernay has been slowly confirming which characters will show up in her big-screen adaptation of The New Gods. In addition to directing the feature, DuVernay will also be co-writing the screenplay with acclaimed comic writer Tom King.

Taking to Twitter, the director confirmed, under no uncertain terms, that The Furies would be making an appearance.

Just 10 minutes later, DuVernay also confirmed that the biggest bad in the DC universe, Darkseid, will be making an appearance as well. (H/t Cinema Blend)

Created by legendary artist Jack Kirby in 1971, The New Gods focuses on twin alien planets, the idyllic New Genesis and Apokolips, ruled by equally powerful but morally opposite leaders. New Genesis is ruled by the benevolent Highfather, and Apokolips by the despot Darkseid. The comics have depicted Darkseid’s efforts to destabilize the fragile peace between the worlds as part of his scheme to eliminate free will from the universe. Darkseid is one of the most dangerous villains in the DC Universe and a constant threat to the Justice League.

King’s multi-Eisner award-winning comic series Mister Miracle, which features many of the New Gods, is centered around the love story between Mister Miracle and Big Barda. The writer received the Eisner Award for Best Writer for his work on Mister Miracle, as well as for DC Comic’s Batman. King will exit Batman after issue 85, with his latest issues centering on Batman trapped in a dream, confronting his greatest fears and heartbreaks.

It has not yet been confirmed if DuVernay’s The New Gods will be connected to DC’s shared movie universe. Characters and concepts that stemmed from The New Gods, such as the villain Steppenwolf or the hybrid Motherboxes, were both featured in 2017’s Justice League. Snyder originally planned to incorporate Darkseid into his superhero crossover flick, but left the film before production was complete.

Vernon and Tiernan co-direct from Matt Lieberman’s screenplay based on Charles Addams’ iconic cartoon series. The film will be produced by Vernon with Gail Berman, via her shingle The Jackal Group, and Alex Schwartz. It will be executive produced by Andrew Mittman, Kevin Miserocchi and Joe Earley. Tabitha Shick, MGM’s Executive Director, Worldwide Motion Pictures is overseeing the project on behalf of the studio. CG Animation and digital visual effects production is underway in Vancouver at Cinesite Studios, one of the world’s most highly respected independent digital entertainment companies.

Morticia, devilishly devoted to her husband and children, is the pale glue that holds her clan together. Gomez, debonair, sinister and passionately in love with his wife, is enthusiastic about whatever dreadful scheme he’s cooked up. Wednesday is a brilliant and sinister teenage girl with long braids and deadpan wit. Pugsley, a menacing 10-year-old on over-drive, enjoys getting into any kind of dreadful mischief he can find. Mad Uncle Fester is good-natured, merry and likes to create mayhem any way he can. Grandmama is smitten with her grandchildren who enjoy her cookies shaped like bats and skulls. Margaux Needler, the reality TV makeover queen, is consumed with a desire for absolute suburban, pastel perfection.

The Addams Family will be distributed theatrically in the U.S. on October 11 — just in time for Halloween!
